This has probably been asked and answered but my search didn't turn up what I need. I have a 2012 Sahara Unlimited with a 3.73 rear end. I am going with 35" tires on a AEV 2 1/2" lift. Will the 3.73 be able to handle most off-road situations - anything within the limits of a 2 1/2" lift? Am I geared low enough? Thanks.

What kind of wheeling are you doin? If its regular rock crawling, the 3.73 will bring the suck. Basic trails, mud, stuff like that 3.73 will be fine. Personally, I don't do a whole lot of rock crawling, but when I do, 3.73 gears are not fun, especially with a manual tranny. But, as I can see, you live in CO, lots and lots of rocks, I lived in Durango for 5 years, I loved it, miss it like crazy,...but I digress!.... Gears are at the top of my list for sure. Even though the 2012 is a better engine, your low end gearing is still the same. BUt dont let your gear ratio prevent you from getting 35s. Get the 35s, regear later.

Your gearing won't be very good for rock crawling but for most trail running you'd be fine. However, gearing to something like a 4.88 will improve your hwy and offroad performance.

Do you have auto? If so, you'll 'get by', but it won't be pleasant crawling. On the auto with 35s, 4.10s would bring you back to stock 'drive ratios' (ie 3.73s with 32s). If you want lower than stock, then 4.56/4.88s will be your choice.

If you're in a manual, 3.73s will really suck....

I am running their 3.5 SC kit on my 2012JKU R 410's and 35's. It does very well. With the gearing you have, I would look at doing a 33" tire with the new 2.5" aev kit. If you are going to go with 35's, I would look to instlal 410's or even 488's. If you wheel light (not a ton of gear, no heavy bumpers, etc) and are going ro run moderate trails, I think you'll be OK, but ideal gearing is listed above.

Thanks for everyone's insite and suggestions. My 2012 is an auto. Any rock crawling I end up doing will be on the mild side. What we encounter here is mostly rock strewn roads and water crossings. Eventually I will most likely go with a 4.88 but not before I feel I have exhausted the limites of this current package. I would guess it will be the same price, parts and labor, whether I go 410 or 488's. I only which I had known to order the 410 on my Sahara from the beginning. This Forum is a huge help in educating me to four wheeling, and to unweight any extra cash from my pockets.

Unless something has changed since I ordered mine last summer, you can only get 4.10s on the Rubicon. So, you got the lowest gearing you could.

My only suggestion ... talk to others running the 3.6L/A580 (ie - 2012s and, presumably, the 2013s when they hit this summer) with 4.88s and 35s before going that low. 'By the math', IMHO, that's too low for the auto...

For what it's worth I have 3.21's and 35 AT's and I rock crawl big stuff all the time without issues. Would better gears and lockers make it easier? Sure..

In a 2012 I would tend to disagree, I have driven plenty of these and they still scoot down the rd just fine. Not if your rock crawling probably not the best combo...then again the fact you got a Sahara would leave me to believe you would not be beating it up in the rocks anyways. I think your fine based on my experiences.

3.73's

I have the 12 Sport JKU auto with 3.73's, currently with 285/70/17's. Installing 2.5 TF coils and 35's tomorrow.

I'm thinking the 12 would most likely compare in driveability to an earlier year model with 4.10's most everywhere except true rock crawling.....at least that's what I'm hoping.

It does have substantially more get up and go than my 2007 JK manual X with the 285's. So much better than the 2007 that I switched from manual to automatic.

Also, will be considering the AEV ProCal if it drives like crap.

Will let you know after tomorrow.

It really doesn't compare to a 3.8 with 4.10's at all....at least in the city/hwy it scoots!
+1 on the procal will return spedo and shift points to stock

I should've rephrased that..."at least as good if not better" with focus on the better. Yes it does scoot. I really couldn't believe the difference even with the same tire set up. The motor is making a huge difference in the city/highway driving for sure.

confirmed: 3.73 and 35's in the 2012 has plenty of get up and go...may not be the best for crawling but don't know.....perfectly fine otherwise though
