Two quick questions:

1. Got a notice in the mail that it is time for my '08 JK's first Powertrain required inspection. Will the service tech have to drop my aftermarket skid plates to perform the inspection? I have all aftermarket skid plates.

2. Would a weak battery make the Malfunction Indicator Light/Check Engine Light illuminate? My JK is not my daily driver. It basically sits in the garage except for the monthly wheeling trips. I start it up occassionally and let it run. I took it for a short trip a few days ago around the block to charge the battery, no check engine light on. So today I started it up, and now the check engine light is on. I was reading the owners manual and noticed in the section for the "emissions inspection and maintenance program" it states the light may be on if the vehicle was recently serviced, had a dead battery, or a battery replacement. There was a slight hesitation when I started the JK this morning, as if the battery had a tough time starting the engine. This is when I noticed the check engine light. So I drove the JK about 6 - 7 miles to charge the battery. Light is still on.

Thanks for any answers.

2. My battery went dead yesterday and the check engine light went on too. Stayed on all day after getting a jump in the morning and after work. After getting a jump this morning, the CEL was off. Stayed off after installing a new battery today. I doubting the CEL was a coincidence and was caused by the battery.

I actually just took in my '08 for the 5 year inspection. I have full skids and didn't have any issues. They were done within an hour.

Might as well have them check the light while you're there. I am sure you can get them to check it for free while they do the inspection. If not just take it to Advanced Auto and let them do it.

Are you getting the CEL or the battery malfunction indicator? If the CEL is on, it's possible that you have a bad battery, but it could be a collection of other issues as well. The battery indicator light means that you have a charging issue and either the battery or alternator has failed. You can have your battery and charging system tested at Autozone or a similar parts store. When the charging issue has been rectified, the light will deactivate automatically.

If you still have the factory battery, I would just buy a new battery and be done.
