Rutdigger: Custom speaker boxes

My buddy from the dark side decided he wanted to put his subs back in his Jeep but didn't want to loose any of the precious cargo area room. So, we decided to make him some customs sub boxes that go along the fender wells. I don't think that photos show this very well but they are molded in a way that still allows the soft top to be folded down. The pics start with the base of one side already molded and removed:

My buddy trimming the sides down:

Getting speaker placement after we made the rings:

Glassing the supports and a cup holder in place:

Quick test fit of the speaker:

This picture is deceiving. There is about an inch from the speaker and the back of the seat. The seat is also maxed out on the rear travel:

We did not have fleece, so we used an old t-shirt of my buddies to stretch over and make the form:

First layer of resin drying:

Ok..we skipped ahead a lot to this point. We added more layers of fiberglass to the form, sanded, added more, sanded added filler, and rough sanded..the cup holder centers have not been cut out yet but that brought us to this point:

Thats where we are so far in this build.

nice work! Way to go incorporating useable cup holders as well. I am looking at options for the JKU because the center ones on the back of the console are ridiculous for my kids (11, 6) to try and reach...2 year old is taken care of with cupholder in his child seat.

Hey man..there is a trash can that fits into the rear cup holders and has two cups holders molded to each side of it..I put that in my rig and I love it. It raises the cup holders up so the kids can actually reach them and also gives me a place to put trash. If you are interested in trying it out I will see if I can find the link for ya..

Great write up. Makes me wish I was a little better with glass. I'm working on a wooden box for my JKU but of course there's a lot more room in there.

Cheers,
Jason

Lol you would be surprised at some of the stuff I have done. You can build anything you want out of fiberglass. You just have to find a way to shape it!! One day I will take the time to post some pictures for everyone. But yeah, PM me if you have any questions or need any help!!

Got a few more pics for ya of the speaker boxes. We started on the other side finally!

We are covering the back of them with the rubber sound proofing spray:

Got a super good deal on some fleece..so we used that on this side:

The top is not completly done. I wanted to get a strong base and front before I started glassing the top.

Be careful with the fleece. If you mix your resion to hot, it could warp your mold. Once the glass heats up it makes the fleece shrink up some. So if you mold is thin then wants you go to fit it back in place, you will have gaps along the edges...

The fleece was just used on the face...the mold was made from straight fiber to prevent shrink....been there, done that bro..

Im the buddy from the dark side and have seen the light.....

This project has been goin on since august/september time frame. Im just ready for these to be done, and I know Rut is to. Then we can move on to better projects like taking a set of $1200 60's and figuring out how the hell to get them to work in the JK.

this is just what I had in mind for my next project! Your progress looks great. Where will the amp be mounted? I was playing with the idea of integrating the amp mount with the enclosure.

Are you wiring them up in such a way that you can remove them easily if necessary? I plan on adding connectors inline on the wiring so I can just unplug the enclosures and pull them if I want to.

How about securing it to the jeep? It looks like it sits in there pretty snug when the backseat is in, but mine is out 90% of the time.

How did you glass the recess for the soft top rails?

I was starting a thread on my build ideas, and I wrote most of a pretty lengthy post and my power went out....sunk cost.
