Wink Clean Switch Install..No rubicons Allowed.

..The Only reason is because The Rubicon's buttons are all pretty much used up

But I Wanted a clean install/Stock look so After some Serious Head Scratching I came up with this:

I feel kinda proud since It's my first non-copycat mod that I've done

So I Started thinking about doing a writeup pretty much towards the end, But Aside from the missing pictures Here is how to do it.

Pull out your dash and remove this Unit. Depending on how many empty button slots you have, that's the amount of switched you have to buy.

There is very restricted space in that little box, the button comes out but you have to take off the circutt board and silicone pad..(BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO LOOSE OR DAMAGE ANYTHING)

Then VERY carefully Start popping out buttons, from left to right are pretty easy, then its the Hazard button, then Another button where depending on your jeep, it may have a Passenger airbag light..Mine didn't.

on that one, the 4th button the one with the "possible passenger airbag light" is kind of odd.. the clips is off, one is towards the side and the other one is towards the middle, completely remove the one towards the middle...We're going to have to superglue this sucker back in.

OK, so We got the buttons out, from inside out Drill a hole in the middle and then shape your button to whatever switch you want.. Keep in mind these are the max size that will fit, The nice round switches with the red LED light are too big.

Put in your switch and see if it fits, do all this for all buttons.

Ok, we got all our holes made. now because of the dept restriction space we have to trim the switches connections, either cut, grind or eat the 3 end of the switches connections.. as close to the round hole as possible, but leave the round hole untouched, we need a cable to go and hold here.

Wire your switches and test them, Make sure they are all in the OFF position and then put them in (why? because if you don't test them and make sure they are in the off position you are going to have one switch facing up, one down, one down, or what ever combination...) this will keep a even uniform Look.

Place them in from the Outside in, Wires first. See where in the box you will need to cut it to allow the cables to come out from UNDER.

At this point, before doing all the below, put back the box the way it came , push down the cables as much as you can down, ALLOWING ROOM for the switchboard and silicon strip to fit.. thats the whole reason for this step.

Test the Hazard button and ESP button, Mine worked first time around.

Here is that 4th button that we had to cut the Clip, its all off and weird but the 1 good clip to the side is holding it in place

Zip tie the edge on the button

Now Superglue the edges, make sure this won't show around the outside because superglue leaves a white residue .. so be real careful here.

Now after all this is good to go, test the hazard and ESP button to make sure they work, if all is good then place back in Dash.

I went ahead and connected all my ground cables to a really thick cable that connects to the firewall, I did the same for the red cables straight to the battery Red., The blue cables is all ready for you Devices.

Now put all the cables back in there somehow (tight fit?) and all will be good

Finished Product.. my blue Switch is a bit crooked but nothing worth making me take oout this thing and put it back together again

Wish I had taken more pics, but if I can do it, you can do it.

I used a file to shape the button into a nice little rectagle for the switch

And sorry for my spelling.

You will need

7mm bolt screw driver thing

philips screwdriver

3 different wires, wire cutters and Electrical tape

A file, plyers and other little stuff I forgot to mention

Superglue + 1 ziptie.. bout 6"

..and switches, Make sure they will fit before you buy them!

FAQ: ( will update as questions roll in)

Q:Why wire the switches when you have nothing yet to hook them on to? Why run the wires??
A: To make sure it all fits and works.. And if you didn't run the wires now, you will have to take out the dash and this unit and run the wires then...Just run the wires and get it all over with.

Q:How long should the wires be?
A: As long as you want them , but no shorter then 8" for ease of work

Q: Something came loose as I was takeing my dash apart, My AC switch came looks bla bla bla
A: Mine did too..it slows the work and you gotta FIX IT. ....fix it.

Q: What doe the Cable Colors mean?
A: The Switch (if it lights up will have 3 prongs, Ground, Device and Power.... you can run Ground and Power right away so you have less work later, Then when you have something like a light or a disco ball that drops from the roof you can connect the Device wire(mine is blue, Fav Color) and connect it to the Device Red/Power, then just ground your device to the Frame or battery black.
If your switch does not light up it will only have 2 prongs.. really Simple One disconnects red or ground? from each other breaking the connection adn then you flip the switch and it continues the connection... Can't screw the 2 prong switch up really.

Q:Why does your spelling and terminology suck?
A:Its' 2230, gotta get up at 0600 and I only had 5 hrs of sleep today..I'm in a hury and I'm not that smart

Q:There's little circles inside the switch button box..What to do?
A: cut, pry them out.. I used a flat head and pried them out

Very cool. I did a similar thing on my old Sahara for a momentary push button wired to a garage door opener hidden behind the console…

But what I gotta know is, where did you get that nifty USB port charger thing stuck in your cigar lighter?!

2007 Jeep Green Rubicon 4-door with various bits 'n pieces... broken in but not even finished!

Subscribed so I can do this when I need to add switches. Thanks for taking the time to detail this process out. I've been wondering how to add switches to the OEM panel for a while and most of what I had found was that it was too hard or couldn't be done due to space.

I also like the USB adapter, added to my wishlist.

I know, I couldn't concentrate on his button mods because I kept thinking of the USB charger.

But once someone posted the DealExtreme link and I ordered one I could go back and read his post. Great job on the buttons.

The net thing is factory. I believe it came out in the 09 and up models.
Good job and write up. I ended up using the Daystar lower switch panel. There is NO room behind that lower panel to put switches otherwise.
