RADIATOR FAN REPLACEMENT WITH SPALUSA WATERPROOF FAN

EDIT:4/29/10 NEW SPAL FAN SHROUD BY UNIVERSAL PARTS https://www.jkowners.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14968
http://www.upiatv.com/detail.asp?PART=RS5200

hey guys I know a bunch of people have been asking about fan replacement, so here is a write up to replace the stock fan. There are about 15ish people running this now, I had one and it burnt out but no one else has had any problems what so ever. this write up was done by a friend. It is model #30102082 and everyones been getting it from ebay dealer Universal parts for about $114.

Step 1. Remove the four retaining thingys from the plastic that covers the radiator.

Step 2. Remove hose from radiator cap

Step 3. Remove radiator reservoir, it is just hanging in slots on the shroud, you can stand it in between the engine and master brake cylinder to hold it straight up

Step 4. Remove the two small screws(8mm) hold the entire fan assembly including shroud to the radiator. to make it easier to then remove the shroud, lift the airbox off the fender, it just pulls up, then you can lift shroud up(bottom just sits in 2v-groves on bottom of rad) twist the passenger side towards back of jeep then lift out.

Step 5. Lay the assembly on the floor and remove the nut hold ing fan blade on. Caution it is REVERSE THREAD 13MM. Next remove the three screws(10MM) holding the fan onto the shroud.

Step 6. Now comes the fun part. Cut the OEM shroud to remove the protection grid over the shroud. Then clean up the left overs to look neat. YOU MUST CUT ALL OF THEM to take out the complete center part of the shroud

Step 7. Place new waterproof SPAL fan into the old hole

Step 8. I drilled holes in the shroud and used stainless steel bolts with locking nuts to secure the fan to the shroud.

Step 9. I taped the fan side with ducktape and then filled the back side with expanding foam

Step 10. After everything dries you can trim it to make it look better. Also the foam will probably expand over the protector grid so make sure you trim accordingly. I didn't take a picture of that either but you get the concept.

Step 11. I went ahead and wired it up with the original two wires. I put black to black and red to green but with a switch between the green and red.(I suggest when you cut the stock wiring to leave 6in of slack or so on the stock wiring connector, just incase u ever need to go back. Also I did not put a switch in mine and dont know of anyone else that did) I know Chunks on here and I think TCOTTON has this fan, not sure of anyone else.

Any questions let me know

Tim

EDIT: ok for those that want to get the spal and keep there stock fan as a spare set up just in case, even nice to have as trail spare for fellow wheelers for when their stock fan craps out You will need a stock shroud. he are all the stock part numbers, but you only need the shroud

shroud part #68039594AA listing now for $61 mopardiscountparts.com has for $41
fan blade #68039593AA .............. $31 .................................... $20
motor #68039595AA ............... $134.................................... $89

How does the amp draw and cfm compare to the stock fan?

notsure of the amp draw of the stock but it runs on 60amp fuse, I was talking with an Engineer with Spal for cpl months he said should run with no problem. The spal is 22amps and 2470cfms. Everyone whos installed it said it definitely seems like it pulls more air then stock. I was never able to find the stock cfm's. but this is the highest high performance 16in cfm fan spal has. The have an extreme performance also but shouldnt be needed.

yes you missed it, $114 part # 30102082 from ebay store universal parts

this is why the stock motor SUCKS

At trade shows Spal runs their fan in a fish tank all day long. 80% of thier business is to auto manufactures just not Jeep I mean it would only make engineering sense to put a water proof fan on a jeep that can ford 30in of water

Highfive on the write up! Looking at your pictures (in other posts) I'm not sure there's ANY fan out there that can put up with your kind of abuse!
Of course this is just one more thing to spend my money on... Thanks...

Hey TKOB, that looks just like my fan after a romp through rancho today!!! So, I found the fan on eBay. Do I need anything else besides the fan? I had heard someplace that people were blowing fuses with these. Anyone having any problems with them?

Sorry, was just wondering to avoid blowing fuses or anything like that. Finally got to take the jeep out with the snorkel for the first time today and my fan died right off the bat.

Well, I have had it out about 5 times, but finally got my snorkel and was looking forward to going swimming, but the fan died. I may get the dealer to replace it with a new one since under warranty, then get the spal and replace it so I have a spare fan.

well that would be great IF the do it under warranty., your dealer cool about covering things?

I'm going to update the end of the write up with the part # for the stock shroud, fan motor and fan blades. If you do get the stock covered and buy the spal you will need the stock shroud because you have to cut out the center of shroud that holds the stock motor. You cant put the stock motor back into it, so you just need the shroud to have a spare.

Ah, didn't know that. Good to know!!! Yeah, don't think they will let me keep the old one.

Well, they have been good so far about covering things, but not sure how this one will go. I have to take this to a different dealer, but they work pretty closely with a local 4x4 shop so I am hoping they won't hassle me too much.

I did this install last week. Was relatively easy. I didn't do the foam though. So far I haven't noticed any ill affects from not having it. It hasn't had any problem keeping it cool.

Also, for those that talk about now only having one speed. I hooked mine up temporarily just to check the wiring. The jeep was started and the AC was turned on while I was holding the fan. The fan kicked on, ran for about 15 seconds, then it went to a higher speed. It was obvious it changed speeds while holding it as you could feel it accelerate and the noise got louder. I haven't been able to tell though with it installed, but I'm sure it's doing the same as the wiring is the same. So, I am pretty sure it's still two speed just like stock.

Oz I agree about the speeds, I had both, its just the low speed on the spal is faster louder then the stock I think thats what fooled some, also the fan doesnt go on high unless u have a/c on till temp is at 222

Working on this right now. The first water crossing on the Mojave road killed mine this morning, i was able to limp home only because it was 43 degrees and raining on the 15 freeway.

killed my entire saturday, i had to go to Corona to Kartek to get one so i could have my jeep back up and running for sunday

I dont know who's worse AEV for lying to me about the radiator being a Griffin and it it isnt or Jeep for making such a sh1tty fan motor assembly.

I'll let you guys know how this works on a Hemi powered JK.

i got the very same part number from Kartek. it worked great today in calico keeping the jeep cool while i broke both front and rear axles on gatekeeper

but i digress. i followed the install and it was more difficult because of the lack of space but it worked. new griffin on the way but this will most likely to cause me to move the fant to the front as the griffin is 1" thicker and i dont have the room.

i'll have plenty of time to play with it, fawkin jeep isnt going anywhere for a while
