Help with Tire Choice

Currently running 34" Interco SSRs, which I love except that they are really heavy and I'm not a huge fan of the rubber compound - chunks pretty easily in the rocks. The SSRs are about worn down and I'm planning to size up slightly to 35s. The 35 SSRs won't fit on my rims (except the narrows, which I don't want), so I've been researching other tires. I think I've narrowed it down to the Mickey Thompson Deegan 38s, Mickey Thompson MTZ P3, Maxxis Bighorn, or the Goodyear MTR. Lots of info out there on the MTR and the Bighorn, so I feel like I know what I'm getting into if I get one of those. Very little info about the Deegans and the MTZ P3, which are newer designs. I just revived an old thread hoping to get info on the Deegans. Any additional info on the MTZP3s or any of these tires would be great. Thanks!

Update - also considering ProComp Xtreme MT2 - lots of info on the original MTs, but not as much as the newer MT2 design.

I think you will be more happy with the MTR's. They have strong sidewalls and are not too heavy.

may not be too much of a factor for you if you're coming from Inteco tires but research that suggestion because many users report the same useful info @karlduke did but the MTRs have an infamous out of round / imbalancability ( or I have read many / known a couple of guys ) but they do perform well off-road. They are also directional which I never cared for as I'm big on my own 5 wheel rotations ...

MTRs aren't directional, they just have to be mounted on the wheel facing the right way. There is a mark for the outside of the tire which needs to face out. No issues with a 5 wheel rotation.

my mistake ; an ASYMMETRICAL tire that is recommended to be mounted only one way but is not directional ( even though that sorta implies a single direction but whatever, Goodyear ...) , the MTR w/Kevlar .....

Have had 35" MTR's for around 8k miles (2 rotations, 5 tire). Ride fine on the street and have performed well on the two off road outings I've been able to take. Run fine up to 80mph (fastest I've felt the need to go). I'd buy them again at this point. We'll see if that changes when I have a few more miles on them.

Thanks for the replies! Yeah I've heard the same reports of MTRs being difficult to balance. But intercos generally have the same issues - it took me a while to find a shop that could balance my SSRs, so I'm used to that. Once I found a good shop I rotated my tires often and got them balanced every 2-3 rotations and have never had any major issues. I would assume I'd have to go through the same with the MTRs, which I'm OK with. I assume most of the people complaining about MTRs not balancing well are expecting them to act like most modern MT tires and not have any issues balancing. So, not really an issue for me unless for some reason the MTRs are worse than Intercos and are simply impossible to balance, but I don't think that is the case.
