17's, 18's or 20"

New member, just picked up 2015 jku rubicon hardrock. Want to go 35's, stick with 17's or go 18's? Jeep will be 90% onroad and i am ok if i have a spare set of offroad only tires/wheels. Any advantages or disadvantages around town with 18's?

Stick with 17's. I've had experience with 17's, 18's and 20's.

20's, even on AT's run rough and they won't allow you to air down as much if you decide to take it offroad and get the itch.

18's (I currently run these): tires are more expensive than gold and they don't look any bigger than 17's. My duratracs are excellent for my DD and love the way it rides

17's (what I'm switching back to): less expensive tires, more size options, will allow for the most sidewall out of the 3 options which means more comfort and air down capability.

'14 Anvil JKU Sportis all that's in my garage.
What would I know though...I'm just crawlin' at the mall.

This one is easy , here is what you will find out when you start looking around for tires .

Prices and choices diminish when you look at 18''s , and more so with 20''s .

17'' tire choices and prices are better than even 16''and 15''.

Do a bit of reading , then when you think you got a handle on the issue and narrow it down to a few choices , then you will be really confused .

Tell us more about how you will use your JK and where you will use it and i'm certain you will get lots of very educated opinions .

- I would agree with this one.

By the way, before you decide on which rim size you'll get, may I know if you're planning to mod your suspension? there are some who put up 35's tires even without any lift.

For your purposes, any wheel and tire size and combo will be fine. If fuel economy is a major concern, stick with 17" wheels on a load range C tire for your on-road driving.

Why the Rubicon Hard Rock?

I vote for sticking with 17's. Personally think they look best on the jeep and give you the right amount of tire for offroading when needed.

heh, ain't that the truth! I've spent more time researching ,asking ,poking & wondering about tires than I would ever want someone to do...cuz they're so damned expensive unless you're on a racing team ...

17" s ,OP.
You will enjoy the options available , road or rock usage...

Stay 17's. You have more tire options and wheels/tires are substantially cheaper with 17s.

I have a Sahara that came with 18" wheels.
I wanted to replace the tires with Goodyear Duratracs.
Called the local shop for an estimate.
$1000 installed for all 5.
Before I placed the order they confirmed the size with 17" rims.
"No, 18" rims" I said.
The readjusted price was $1500!
I bought a full set of OEM Rubicon take-offs instead.
I'd never go to 18" wheel again...

I love the 18" wheels I got, and the tires (Cooper STT Pro) was about the same price if 17" or 18". My set of 5 Cooper STT Pro 37x13.5-18 tires, were $1700 cash money no receipt and no tax, mounted and out the door from a local mom and pop tire shop.


I'd post a picture, but as you know they have this forum de-nutted so that you can't upload photos. Interestingly, they still advertise like French whores to make money.

If I have 18 inch stock wheels/tires on my Sahara. What would be a good 17 inch to trade its place or would it be smarter to leave the 18 on

if you are doing the same size tire stick with the factory wheel, if going bigger/wider go to a 17" wheel with the needed bs for the size of tire.

I'd like to know what tires you're looking at that are priced better at R17 than R15, I find the opposite to be true.

Tires are cheaper for 17 instead of 15? That's not my experience. I'm on 17s and have been told that I could buy steelies and tires for the price of (5) 17r mud terrains.
I'd gladly buy elsewhere. I'm in California. That probably has something to do with it... Lol

When I was just a young man I went with 18" fuels and 33s because I thought they were cool. After I started learning shit and did some work I went up to 35s with the 18s. After paying about $1550 for those I realized that those were the last set I buy. Those tires wore out and just as before I went up to 37s and 17s. Sold those pos fuels and haven't turned back. The cost and options at 18 absolutely sucks.
