Howdy Ya'll - Need ideas about adding a volt meter

Howdy. Appreciate this forum and all the work that goes into it!
Two weeks ago we were out camping with the plan to spend some quality time on a beautiful series of creeks in our canoe. Got up at o-dark 30 to drive the JK with the canoe on the roof down to the creek shore. Jeep would not start. Zero battery. Absolutely sure no lights or other battery drains were left on over night. After several jump starts and motor running to recharge the battery, it became clear the 2-1/2 year old factory provided battery was no longer able to hold a charge. Had to cancel canoeing and had to go buy and install a new battery. Now learning that Jeep (and Chrysler products in general) earns poor marks in battery life and we are simply their latest victims. Our JK does not have a battery status gauge or meter. We now want to install one so we might at least get some warning of the next battery failure. Have studied the driver's dash area for candidate locations to mount an aftermarket battery gauge. Have not come up with a good mounting location or mounting scheme. Would like to wire the battery gauge directly to the battery, but likewise do not see any obvious and direct way to route the wires back into the cabin and dash. Would greatly appreciate guidance from anyone who has installed an aftermarket battery gauge in a recent model JK. Also, greatly appreciate suggestions as to make and model of an "automotive quality" battery gauge. Have seen on ebay battery gauges that simply plug into a cigarette lighter socket. Have doubts about the quality and reliability of such a battery meter and would like to achieve a little more permanent and "professional" appearing installation. Thanks for any and all guidance and suggestions!
