Where to stop...

... between Atlanta and SE NM?

Long story short, I'll be doing a road trip from NJ to AZ with the wife and kids next month and I'm looking for good places to stop. I'll be staying with my brother just east of Atlanta for a night or two and the next scheduled stop isn't until Carlsbad, NM. Can any of you suggest a good place(s) to stop between those two locations? Something relatively close to I-20 would be great as that'll probably be our route across the States.

Thanks in advance.

If you're heading to Carlsbad, check out White Sands National Park in the White Sands Desert. The sand is literally pure white with huge dunes. Cool to see. I want to say it's near Alamagordo, NM.

I was more talkin' about overnight stops (i.e. 1/2 way or 1/3 of the way and 2/3 of the way), but I'll keep that in mind, too.

Gotcha. Can't help there. I made one stop in Amarillo overnight on the move from Watkins Glen to Prescott. Good hotels and a great steakhouse there.

I would avoid El Paso as much as possible. Pick somewhere either before or after there.

Going south Blue Ridge Pkwy/Natchez Trace etc from NJ to Hotlanta and beyond south to nawliens

Going west a bit north of 20 along the ok/ar border there is a great side route over a ridge similar to driving the blue ridge parkway but with a classic national forest lodge on top and a forest of miniature oaks

Last time across we drove past the castle (lunch) tho and stayed at Robber Cave State Park in a old CCC cabin made of huge boulders and logs. There are campsites and a motel there too overlooking the mountains. Kids will love the caves although Robbers Cave itself is more of a slot.

Carlsbad Caverns is a great call, If the time of year is right be sure to stick around for sunset and watch the bats come out of the cave.

x2 on a whitesands stop.....

edit O **** I just read the castle link and it's closed till 2013, well FWIW
