I'm starting this thread in hopes of getting a group together for a trip to Drummond Island, MI in mid-August.
This will be an excellent opportunity for anyone who has not been up there to experience this amazing offroader-friendly island. There is a wide array of state-managed trails that feature some very beautiful scenery and challenging obstacles for beefed up and stock Jeeps alike. Marblehead and Log Jam are musts but other points of interest will be visited as well.
I am expecting this to be a family-friendly
trip that everyone involved in can enjoy. I am hoping that my fellow Jeepers will expect the same.
There will be a voting link released in the coming days to decide which weekend (8/10) or (8/17) to run this. I like this time of year the most as it seems the UP Black Fly season (March - July) has subsided by then.
Around this time is also good as a last hurrah to summer before the kids head back to school but without trampling on any Labor Day plans they you may have.
Meet up around Metro Detroit early Friday morning and convoy up together as a group. Get off of the ferry and onto the island in the mid-afternoon, get ourselves settled in, and grab dinner and wheel/chill by bonfire for the night. Wheel Saturday. Wheel Sunday until about mid-day, pack up and convoy home. As stated earlier, there are a few specific locations that we will visit but suggestions are welcome and also encouraged.
Lodging / Camping:
There is The Drummond Island Resort BUT one of the marinas on the island gave us a decent deal on tent / camper spots and cabin lodging last year. They also let us use an open-sided pole-barn next to the tent-area which served not only as a shelter and point to set up grills and such but an excellent meeting spot to plan the day's schedules.
The marina's staff was also very friendly as they provided us with picnic tables, a decent deal on firewood, and reduced rates on accommodations. Not going to name just yet only because I don't want to tip off the Hummer crowd that we're looking to book the location
Pot Luck breakfast/dinner
Possible if enough interest. These is a IGA on the island for any forgotten supplies also.
Just kicking off a discussion at this point.
