Drummond Island - August 9-11, 2013

I'm starting this thread in hopes of getting a group together for a trip to Drummond Island, MI in mid-August.

This will be an excellent opportunity for anyone who has not been up there to experience this amazing offroader-friendly island. There is a wide array of state-managed trails that feature some very beautiful scenery and challenging obstacles for beefed up and stock Jeeps alike. Marblehead and Log Jam are musts but other points of interest will be visited as well.

I am expecting this to be a family-friendly trip that everyone involved in can enjoy. I am hoping that my fellow Jeepers will expect the same.

There will be a voting link released in the coming days to decide which weekend (8/10) or (8/17) to run this. I like this time of year the most as it seems the UP Black Fly season (March - July) has subsided by then.

Around this time is also good as a last hurrah to summer before the kids head back to school but without trampling on any Labor Day plans they you may have.

Tentitive Schedule:
Meet up around Metro Detroit early Friday morning and convoy up together as a group. Get off of the ferry and onto the island in the mid-afternoon, get ourselves settled in, and grab dinner and wheel/chill by bonfire for the night. Wheel Saturday. Wheel Sunday until about mid-day, pack up and convoy home. As stated earlier, there are a few specific locations that we will visit but suggestions are welcome and also encouraged.

Lodging / Camping:
There is The Drummond Island Resort BUT one of the marinas on the island gave us a decent deal on tent / camper spots and cabin lodging last year. They also let us use an open-sided pole-barn next to the tent-area which served not only as a shelter and point to set up grills and such but an excellent meeting spot to plan the day's schedules.

The marina's staff was also very friendly as they provided us with picnic tables, a decent deal on firewood, and reduced rates on accommodations. Not going to name just yet only because I don't want to tip off the Hummer crowd that we're looking to book the location

Pot Luck breakfast/dinner
Possible if enough interest. These is a IGA on the island for any forgotten supplies also.

Just kicking off a discussion at this point.

Any interest?

I want snowboarding.

Woodward Dream Cruise is August 17th.

We have Classic Car friends coming in from the PGH area that weekend.

Perhaps another date in September?

If its August, then 17th would be best for me. Kids will be back in school already, so it would be just me.

Doesn't matter to me on the date as long as I know a month in advance.

10th works good for me. I'd have to see what I could do about the 17th.

I've added a poll at the top of this thread that will run until 5/19 at 20:53 (don't ask why it's not 21:00) that will help me peg down which weekend and type of accommodation that each Jeeper will need.

I realize that it's a little vague as far as numbers in each cabin but I intend to contact those who elect any of the cabin options to square that info away after the poll is completed.

The BASE rates for the cabin/campsites are as follows (daily):
Tent/Rustic: $36
Modern/Camper :$44
Cabin: click here

I know it seems high but anyone who ran last year's trip will tell you that it was money well spent given all the extras we received in terms of our own space and enclosed meeting area.

**If we are able to put together a decent turnout, I may be able to negotiate the rates down a bit**

Thank you for your participation!

I voted in the pole and we will have our camper it would be nice to have electrical hook ups but not a must for us. We are pretty self contained.

Im pretty sure that you have two choices with the camper: Rustic (like the tents) or Modern (with the hook ups).

Rustic like for tents would work fine for my expedition trailer. No need for power.

So now that the deadline has past, looks like most votes are for the weekend of the 17th. Are we going with this date officially?

Yea, I saw that. Starts on Thursday, $50 per driver + 50 per additional adult and 15 per child age 10-17 and free for those under 10. There is the raffle for EJS2014 and a banquet to consider for the $$. And they do donate the fees to charity groups located on the island which is cool.

But 50 rigs of various models and builds seems kind of busy to me (I personally hate crowds). They also had to pull a permit with the DNR to make it legal because their event is larger than 19 rigs...interesting.

I'm hoping we can just be a small group off to the side just doing our own thing without the fees, taking off a Thursday in additional to Friday to travel and set up, and all that.

Note on this: We need to reserve cabin/camp space FAST. Say a rough average of 3 perons per Jeep x 50 is is...well...a lot of people. I'll try to reach out to the organizer at the event to make sure we don't wind up jamming each other's itineraries up.

I'll get with the site owners tomorrow to get the rates finalized...stay tuned.

If its going to be a problem because of DOA, we can change the date. Doesn't matter too much to me. I just voted for the weekend I prefered, but could do either.
