Welcome to the 1st Annual Dirty Turtle Spring run on Michigan’s Drummond Island! After a long and cold winter full of snow and Jeep modifications, most of us are itching to kick start the 4x4 season with a bang! What better way than to visit the Upper Peninsula’s premiere off-road playground?
For those unfamiliar with Drummond Island, you can expect average temperatures to be around 45 to 55 degrees so be sure to pack clothes that will keep you comfortable and warm. Drummond Island has some of the best state trails and scenery in the mid-West, and Turtle Ridge ORV ranges from mild to wild so prepare for a great weekend of wheeling. Remember to bring and extra pair of shoes and as always, prepare for the worst and hope for the best!
The dates for Dirty Turtle are Thursday, April 18th – Sunday, April 21st, however for those who wish to just off-road Friday and/or Saturday, you can meet up with us on the island. Thursday will be used primarily to get a head start to the trip. Be sure to pick up your 2013 Michigan ORV sticker from your local sporting goods or grocery store and also bring some cash on the trip as both the Mackinaw Bridge and the Island Ferry accept cash only.
The meeting location for Thursday night will be the Super 8 motel in St. Ignace, Michigan. The motel is providing everyone in our group with a $55 rate for the night, just be sure to mention you are with the “Dirty Turtle” group!
For those meeting with us Friday on the island, a drivers meeting will be held at Sune’s Restaurant & Bar located on the corner of East Channel Road and South Shore Road at 12 noon, just look for the large group of JK’s.
After the drivers meeting, we will be heading to the lodge to check in and drop off luggage and gear. Listed below are the details of the lodging location and rates. From the lodge, we will head out towards the west end of the Island and run the state trails.
Tentative schedule and details
Thursday, April 18th (Optional)
We are planning to be at the Super 8 motel around 9:00 – 9:30 p.m. We have people travelling up from the Detroit area as well as Sturgis, MI, so if you would like to meet up and convoy to the U.P. please just let us know and this can be arranged. The plan is to meet up with everyone at the motel and say hi as well as grab a bite to eat or have a drink.
Friday, April 19th
For those who travelled up Thursday, we will be checking out and meeting for breakfast at 9:00 a.m. and departing for De Tour Village shortly thereafter. It will be an hour drive to the ferry so get your cameras out and take pictures of the beautiful surroundings. The ferry leaves for the island at 20 to each hour, so we will try to make the 10:40 a.m. and proceed to the drivers meeting location for 12 noon. There is gas, grocery, and a restaurant at this location.
For those meeting up with us on Friday who weren’t with us on Thursday, please allot yourself enough time to arrive on the Island and to the drivers meeting by 12 noon. Most of our Jeeps have CB radios and will be on channel 16 all day. At the meeting we will discuss which trails to run, introduce everyone, air down, disconnect sway bars, and anything else needed to get ready for wheeling. Please bring snacks or a lunch for the day as well as fluids to keep hydrated. We will try to be on the road at 1:00 – 1:30 p.m. From the meeting we will be heading to our lodge to drop off gear and head out to the state trails from there. We most likely will return to the lodge around 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. At the lodge, we will make supper and have a bon fire. Everyone is encouraged to participate as we plan on having a great time!
Saturday, April 20th
Now remember this is a vacation! We want to get an early start but not too early. We would like everyone to be up and ready to head to Turtle Ridge by 10:30 a.m. Turtle Ridge is very large and we have a lot of ground to cover. We will more than likely be in the park the entire day so please pack accordingly with a lunch and beverages. After the park we will return to the park and cook supper, have a bon fire, and for those who wish, enjoy some apple pie moonshine as per tradition!
Sunday, April 21st
Sunday is a free day, those who wish to pack up and head home can do so, but depending on weather and how people are feeling we may head out and run the state trails once more. It is entirely up to each and every person, but a convoy home is always cool.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. There is also a Facebook event for this trip and you are more than welcome to join it, just ask to be added!
