Transfer Case Issue and Dealership

So Ferman Jeep has my JK right now because the transfer case lever gets stuck going into 4-low and then stays stuck in neutral until I jam it into gear or rock the jeep. Ferman just called and told me all is normal with it and apparently I don't know how to operate it.. Besides being offended at the assumption of my ignorance, I'm more curious if this actually is normal operation for a JK?? Transmission to neutral and put transfer case n gear.. Not hard!

Yes you do need to be slowly rolling to shift between 4hi, n and low. As stated in the manual. If you are stopped it can get stuck, it's not fully sycro'd/ user error

It should not get stuck if you are moving. Period

Right so rolling slowly and put in neutral and in gear.. Why all the grinding and stuckness then??

Because "slowly" varies person to person. I never grind even with the 4:1 case. I go slowly as in I can maybe push it as fast as I'm going. Just crawling.

In other words, moving so slowly that you are barely moving. Less than 2 mph. I am barely creeping when I put mine in.
also, as you are inguaging the shifter, don't force it. it will just slip in when the syncros line up.

Send a message via AIM to paramaniac

I found it helps to have the transmission in neutral as well.

Appreciate the offer dick!! I actually plan on coming by tomorrow if the rubi rails will be off.. Apparently all said and done I am ignorant! Spoke for a while with the Asst. Service manager, Kevin who was knowledgeable and a long time jeep guy.. Turns out proper technique is to put tranny in neutral, remove foot from brake and gas, push transfer case lever to 4hi or 4lo and it slides right in.. So the trick is to put in neutral and take foot off brake before touching lever.

I find being in neutral and at a full stop usually works for 4 low. Sometimes at about a mile an hour but usually stopped works best for me.
