vehicle regulations

i will be moving to san diego at the end of the year. i would like to know of any vehicle regulations about modifying your vehicles. comming from hawaii they have reconstruction inspections for any mods you do. is there any limits about that in cali? a link to the information would suffice my needs.

I think Hawaii would be a little more strict. The only one I hear about are the mud flaps...but that's only in certain areas.

It is very easy to register an out of state vehicle in California. The only inspection is to make sure the vin numbers are good and that you have a "50 state" vehicle as far as smog equipment goes. You MUST do this within 20 days of the first day the vehicle enters the state or there are some pretty hefty fines. If you are a AAA member you can get this done at any AAA office in southern california and avoid the long lines at the DMV.

There is a legal limit on lift height on passenger vehicles, but I don't recall the numbers. Of course there is no limit on all those poser pickups running around with 10" lift kits because they are not passenger vehicles. I have only heard of one guy getting ticketed with his 80 series LandCruiser and I think he had about 7" and ran 37s. It has something to do with the height of the bumpers. But it doesn't seem to be enforced much.
