Date spot in Costa Mesa

Hey fellow SoCal'ers. Going on a date tonight and looking for some tips in the Costa Mesa area.

Goat Hill Tavern. Not a great "date" spot, but an old favorite drinking establishment.

Other than walking around the mall, Costa Mesa is pretty boring, IMO. Go to Newport.

Doable. What's over there you'd suggest?

On second thought, maybe not, being that it's winter and a wee bit chilly at the beach. I would normally say Balboa or one of the many restaurants on Newport Blvd.

I haven't had to date in over a decade, so I'm a bit out of touch what's out there to do.

The YardHouse is a great restaurant for dates. The food is great too! (plus, it's right across the street from Goat Hill)

Ok... so, are you looking for loud or quiet/romantic? Pricey or moderate? Dinner or just drinks? A little background and we can narrow this down to some great places....

1. Goat Hill Tavern is great... 100s of beers on tap, CROWDED and LOUD on Friday and Saturday nights.
2. The Helm (right next door) is your typical dive bar. Less beer, more booze. Less people, but all of them characters (maybe NOT the type you want to meet on a date)...
3. The Harp is a great, little Irish pub... usually have a good band on Friday and Saturday nights.
4. Yard House is cool. Pretty good food and pretty good beer... pricey in my opinion.
5. Best Mexican food this side of the border is at a little hole-in-the-wall spot called Taco Mesa.
6. There is Club Detroit if yer into "Mexi-Rave-Disco"
7. Newport Fashion Island has all the "Mall Restaurants" to choose from...

Down on PCH, there are a number of little trendy restaurants and bars... go toward Balboa or Newport and you'll hit 20 or 30 hot spots in OC.

Honestly, first date - teacher and you want to make a good impression, keep it simple, go to Yard House. If she looks like the adventurous type, then walk across the street to Goat Hill.

Just my two cents - unsolicited.

Orange hill is a cool restaurant as well. We go there for Sunday brunch a few times a year. Really great views from the place.

Not in costa mesa obviously, but just up the road. You can see forever from up on the hill.

I have fun going around South Coast with my girlfriend. There are a few good restaurants there as well. Is this a first date? If so, it might be better to go somewhere where you are comfortable.

Goat Hill is a cool and fun dive bar but also look into some places down by Lido Island. There are some nice places on the water at the harbor.

Which one? There's a place called "I love Sushi" on Harbor. The name is cheesey, but they got some great sushi chefs behind the bar - good stuff.
