Camper Towing. 2010 vs 2012

Just wondering if anyone tows a Travel Trailer sized camper with the 07-11 JKU, and tried it with a 2012. I wonder if the extra power will make much difference. I hope so.

I have a 18' Forest River Micro Lite I bought (downsized) so I could pull it with my 2010 JKU. It's 3000lbs dry, 250lbs TW. So it's under or close to the 3500lb max towing. I have trailer brakes & use a WD hitch. It pulls it to close to home places where I can stay on the back roads, but it' a struggle. I wouldn't even think of getting on the interstate.

I guess i'll find out as soon as I get the 7 pin harness & brake modulator installed in the 12.

Question answered.
Got the brake controller hooked up today & hooked the trailer (w/out W/D hitch) up for a test & tune. Adjusted the controller & drove around 20 miles.

2012 JKU Sahara 6 speed w/3.21's, 600 miles.

Let me say I did this with my old 2010 auto w/3.73's, and this 3.6 VVT HAS some balls! A little slip of the clutch and its off, run her easy up to 3k & shift to 2nd, up to 3k & hit 3rd. 4th gear will get up to highway speeds wery easy. In 5th I hit the cruise and it pluged along @ 1900rpm. I hit the up button and could feel it pull right on up a notch. Mind you it was dead calm and Florida flat. The same route the 2010 would kick down on the small bump in the road, race to 4000rpm & make noise instead of speed.

BTW mpg did drop from 18 to 16.6 lol. Quite impresed so far but real world towing will tell the tale. Yes I know 3.73's would be the thing for towing, but as a DD I'm loving the mpg so far & will only tow the camper every now & then.

Nice thing about a camper,,,,Cold beer and a Shitter are right behind you.

Yea the new motor pulls great. It'd definitely be better suited with the 3.73's.. but oh well. Looks like a blast! What do one of those campers run

I could be wrong, but aren't the JKs with 3.21's rated lower on towing than those with 3.73's and 4.10's?

You are not wrong. I'd perfer the max tow pac with the 3.73, but I got a deal I could'nt refuse. Kind of figured that with the 6 speed I could choose a gear and not wory about a trans cooler. I thought if it dont handle it, 3.73 takeouts wont be hard to find.

The old 2010 3.73 auto would turn 2800-3000 rpm at 55mph O/D off, and had no power to speed up 2 more mph without kicking down and well,,,,making lots of noise. The 3.6 w/3.21 pulls better from 2000 rpm than the 3.8 w/3.73 ever did at any rpm.

The jury is still out and we will find out.

With a '12, you wouldn't have needed the trans cooler anyway, I don't think. The new tranny would've pulled that trailer with no problem whatsoever.

For the lighter weight, and well equiped including a slideout, about the price of a stripped steel wheel 2dr .Or maybe 2 of those tiny Jeep camper thingies. I've seen lighter weight campers but we are getting older and comfort is a nice thing,

I'm not sure what package it is, but there have been some 12 factory coolers on autos. Plenty of posts on overheating autos on pre 12's.

Went to the woods for a few days of fishing & trails. Had the water tank & fridge cramed full. I could tell I was pulling more weight and will hook up the WD bars next trip.

But man when this engine hits 1800 rpm it starts pulling in the first 4 gears. 5th gear @ 55mph just fine. Put about 130 miles on her combined tow, road, & trails in 4lo. Topped it off and got 17.5 mpg. Amazing.
6speed 3.21's

No 35 miles, some on dirt roads each.way. then set up camp. Then 120,000 acres to ride.
