New camera!

So to start off, I have very few toys that are my own. Even the jeep is my wife's daily driver and our weekend toy. She is a semi-pro photographer, and as such I dabble in a little photography more as a hobby than anything else.

I bought her a Canon 60D from Best Buy for her birthday last year, and got a 1 year geek squad coverage plan that included 2 cleanings of the camera and the lens that it came with.

So we took it up to Best Buy a couple weeks ago to use up one of the cleanings, and they sent it off to their repair center. Then I got an email this weekend telling me to head up there, they needed to talk to me about it. Turns out they found a crack in the frame (the 60D has a hardened plastic frame rather than a metal frame) and they were going to exchange the camera for what I paid for it, and prorate whatever was left on the geeksquad coverage.

So we got the option of getting another 60D, and have a little best buy cash leftover cuz the price has gone down...or upgrade for a couple hundred bucks more.

Gotta say, it was a hard desicion to make, cuz Ive got a wish list a mile long for her jeep, but we sprung the extra cash for a new 7D!

I'm pretty impressed with it, but I've only played with it for about half an hour tonight. I really like the built in wireless flash control. I like taking staged still shots, and you can do some pretty neat stuff by moving the flash around. And the 8 fps is blazing fast for taking action photography. Its quiet, even quieter than the 60D. And the controls are easy to find and reach without changing your grip on the camera. The lens it came with is pretty decent, Image Stabilizing, USM Focus, 28-135 mm, 3.5-5.6f, 72mm diameter. But we're going to get a good wide-angle, and then sometime in the future get get good telephoto lens.

In fact the only thing I really don't like about it so far is the fact that it uses Compact Flash cards. Not many cameras use that anymore, and I know it was overpriced at BB, but an 8 gig was $180!!! yeeesh. We'll have to shop around the internet for those.

Anyways, thought I'd share that little novel with ya'll.

Does anyone else here use a 7D or ever owned one?

Nice! I'd like some white lenses.
Do you shoot professionally?

This was a big step up from the 60D. I was messin with it again last night, and realized I am horribly uneducated. I need to take a class or somethin.

I'd kill for that set-up. I'm currently shooting w/ a D5000, but I'm considering maybe steeping up to the D7000 in the near future. More than anything, though, I really want a Sigma 10-20mm f/3.8 wide angle glass. Love that lense!

OP...check Fry's for pricing on your CF card. I got a 16GB SanDisk Ultra III for $120 at Best Buy because they price match. Regular price on it was about $185 in '09 when I bought it.

Oh...and....

I don't shoot professionally in the sense that it is my job but I do sell my pics. However I'm a long way from getting my money out of it. That 7d you got your hands on is an awesome camera. It has a lot of features I wish the 5d had. My biggest advantage is it is a full frame camera with very high resolution.

Don't know that you need a class. It's very similar to the 60d just a few extra bells and whistles. Go out and shoot and you will get the hang of the controls.

I would check to see when a seminar is rolling through your area... they cost some money, but there are some decent professionals that will come to certain cities and give seminars...

Or the cheaper alternative would be to pick up these!

Nice!

I've had my Nikon D90 since the first day it was released (i was able to preorder it). I recently sold all my crap off-brand lenses for a Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8.... This lens was more expensive then my camera, and it is a BEAST! The whole lens is metal housing, no plastic. Heavy, but sexy.
Its perfect for wide-angle in my book, but now I'm screwed without some long range.

I only have a xt, but I am yet to have an issue where I needed better...

I also didn't like the flash cards at first, but Seagate changed my opinion with the micro drive. I got the 4g at first, but there was a compatibility issue, so I called them, and they paid for overnight shipping to replace it, and sent me an 8 instead at no charge! I have been using it for 5 years now (I got it sometime in '06). NO ISSUES!!!

Yeah, walmart had the sandisks for a reasonable price, she picked up 2 4 gigs for 20 bucks a piece. That's probly good enough for what she does; I'm just happy she lets me play with it...

But are they actual HDD's or CF cards? Mine is a mini HDD, and that is one hell of a price! When I am in sport mode, after 40 or so pics, I can hear it start whizzing to keep up. I can usually get to around 80 without it having to stop to think. IIRC, my manual for the camera says 15 or so with a CF card.

Edit: That is at 5 MP setting. When I lower it to 3, my finger gets tired after 150 or so, so I do not know the limit.

My bad, they are 4 gig cf cards. This thing has a ton of internal memory, with the cards we bought, the manual says it can take almost 100 large pics in high speed continuous (8 fps). It can save the image as a jpeg (large is 6.6 mb) or a RAW image (large is 25.1 mb) OR it can record both file types at once, which i've been told is good for editing later. Thats over my head tho. My wife is the photoshop wiz.

But anyways, here are some pics of the camera I took with my cell phone, and some photos I took in the yard, playin around with it this afternoon.

The pic below was taken around dusk with no flash, ISO of 1000, shutterspeed of 1/50 sec, and aperture of 5.6;

That's me plinking around with it. All you avid photobugs feel free to throw any critique my way. I know we'll get a ton of good photography with this rig. I'm glad we went ahead and got it rather than replaced the 60D, even though that was a good camera too.

Oh and it also takes hi def video, and the button for that is super easy to get to, unlike the 60D. There were a couple times I wanted to get a vid of someone drivin over stuff, but couldn't remember how to record video. The 7d has it right on the back by the eyecup, flip it to video and hit start, thats it.

Yeah, that's a real nice feature as far as the switch for pics/vids. Wish my camera had that. And the raw/jpeg button is nice, too, although I generally shoot everything in RAW and then process in PS later. I think I just get more detail shooting in RAW vs. jpeg.

My D5000 will shoot 720p video, too, but from what I've found, the mic on it is shit. It distorts at the slightest hint of any real volume, which for me pretty makes the video function useless.

Good choice on camera!

As for CF, I can see the complaint for new commers, but for those of us invested in Canon I'm not looking forward to the day I have to invest in new memory and carry both kinds. Though I am sure it will come.

Here is a good Canon forum:

I'm hoping the 5D MKIII get's the 7D focusing. You still can't beat full frame for portraiture.

Have always been a fan of canon, but our two previous cameras (rebel xSi and 60D) used sd cards. I thought it was gonna be a big deal, but now I don't care. I was just frustrated at the Best Buy teen trying to sell me a $200 memory card.

Thanks for the link

I would love to have a full frame camera. Hopefully the wife's photography takes off and then I can help her buy more toys

I just got a Nikon P100, it's as close as you can get to a DSLR without actually having one. Basically it has a good ISO range and everything is manually adjustable similar to a DSLR with out the big price. Plus, it has 26X optical zoom. Here's a pic I snapped today from my patio.

2007 Sahara 2dr, 3.5" RK X Factor Plus Long Arm, Dana 44 Rubicon front axle w/locker, Dana 44 Rear, Poison Spyder BFH w/stinger, Poison Spyder fenders F&R, Poison Spyder Rocker Knocker, 37" Pitbull Rockers Bias Ply, 17x9 Spyderlocks, 1350 Drive shafts, Hard Rock 4x4 Rear bumper w/tire carrier & gas can mounts, Poly Pro front axle tube, Poison Spyder evap skid. Upcoming: RR Snorkel, Skid plates

I use a 1DmkII which can use either CF or SD. I personally prefer CF as they are more robust and in most cases cheaper. All Pro cameras still use CF cards. Keep an eye on BB I got a Kingston 16gb for $19.
Good Luck and have fun..
BTW no need for a seminar, spend some time and read the manual thoroughly. You will learn alot more about the camera that way.

Yeah....blown out HDR, but it looks really tastefully done. Doesn't have as much of a surreal effect as what people usually kill HDR pics with these days. So...yeah...maybe a little blown out, but it's still a great quality shot.

What glass was that shot with?
