Expedition type hiking food

So I am doing the West Coast Trail in a few weeks time.

I am having a hard time planning my food for the 5-7 day trip. If anyone is familiar with the trail, you must pack everything in and out on your back, nowhere to replenish food, ect.

So my question is, what do you guys bring on longet hikes? I have an MSR water filter that works great and a nice light, little stove. I have used the dehydrated meals before but I am looking for any other suggestions?

Must not spoil and be relatively light as my pack is already around the 40 lb mark.

Any suggestions?

I was always a fan of the Zataran's packaged meals for our dinners. Red beans and rice ect... We would always cook some smoked bacon that would keep for up to 4 days or so to mix in with it. Now adays you can find all kinds of packaged, precooked chicken, pork, and steak that don't require refridgeration. We would cut the cooking instructions off the box and repackage everything into ziplocks.

Breakfast was always instant coffee and flavored oatmeal. There is also a powdered peanut butter product out, PB2 it's not bad on crackers.

Lunch was usually just a power bar or something similar along with any jerky and dried fruit we prepared.

Crystal light mix with your filtered water gives a little variety. Occasionally we would take absolut with us in a coke bottle to mix with it.

The no bake cheesecake makes for a nice treat on the trail. It helps if there is a cold stream nearby to set whatever you are mixing it in to help it set up.

The one tradition we always observe on our backpacking trips is packing in steak and baked potatoes with all the trimming for the first dinner on the trail. You pack it all in the bottom of your backpack. It will stay cool enough. You only carry the weight for one day and it is definately worth it.

If at first you don't succeed, don't take up skydiving.

Crooked1 and I must have read the same "camping for dummies" manual.

Crystal light packets, beef jerky, dried fruit/trail mix and energy bars (usually clif) are all on my list of stuff I bring. Never done the steak thing but I like it. My "must have" treat is fig newtons.

Never done the west coast trail but is fishing an option? Did some epic mountain bike rides in Colorado and we caught our dinner.

Thanks for the ideas guys!

I would imagine fishing is an option as the trail follows the Pacific, but I just don't want to carry the extra gear!

I have a bunch of dehydrated dinners, its the lunch/snack thing that has me stumped. I will be doing the jerky, trail mix, energy bar deal for lunches but that can get boring after 6 days!

Great idea on the crystal light, I might just use the tablets on this trip, the crystal light will help hide the taste.

I thought the same thing. However, I found that for whatever reason those simple meals/snacks (boring as they seem for lunch) taste better on the trail and are quite satisfying. It might just be due to the fact that your body needs the energy that much more. Or it could have been just my imagination.


One of my favorite backpacking memories was on day 5 of a 10 day trip in the Smokey Mountains National Park. We ran across a young couple on horse back with a pack mule. They had packed in steaks and a bunch of beer on ice. They insisted on sharing their hot food and cold beer with us. I can only hope for the same for you. Have a great trip.

Yeah, and you can get MRE's for 60$/12 packs.
Check some MRE forums, they always have great deals.
It makes nice hot meals, and 1 pack includes a complete day of food.
(but I like to eat little stuff like beef jerky, nuts, pre-dehydrated fruits, etc during the day)

Also some "Survival bars" could be useful if you end up staying 2-3 more days in the trails... (1 bar gives you 3 days of "food", at 1200 calories per day)

They taste pretty good, like vanilla cake...

We also dehydrate spaghetti sauce...
Just let it boil for some time and it gets thick.
Double ziplock and you just add hot water when you're ready for your pasta meal. (pastas are light and easy to carry)

Thanks for the info guys!

I got back from the trail on Friday. Ended up taking way too much food.

Clif bars are totally worth it, those suckers pack a bunch of calories!!
I used a bunch of dehydrated meals. Some were great and some of them really sucked!

I know know the amount of food to sustain 6 days of hiking. My pack was 52 lbs.... 14 lbs was food!!!!

Next time I am sure I can get it down around 8-10 lbs of food.

Nice.
I was going to recomment mountain house food. A bit heavy but iv never had one i dont like.

Personally i ususally just go with oatmeal packs for breakfast, clif bars and cheese for lunch, and raman noodles, rice, and chicken packets for dinner.
Im a member of the whole hike LIGHT crew. I can be on the trail for 6 days and my pack will be under 30 lbs....

I am working on ultralite hiking as well. I brought a bunch of unnecessary items of this hike but I learned TONS for the next one.


Going lite it pretty expensive though....My pack and thermarest are both about 6-7 years old. Its crazy what is available now!!!

I did just buy a 3-man tent that is only 2.8 kilos with fly, pretty excited about that purchase!
