Bumper/airtank ?

A couple years ago I saw a guy who had made his rear bumper out of square tube and welded end caps on and a 2" hitch receiver on the bottom, then drilled and tapped fittings with a regulator and made his bumper into about a 20 gallon air tank. Are there any disadvantages to this other than danger of rupture (just use gnarly gauge steel)?

Any of the aftermarkters doing this?

A bumper can't hold enough volume to be a reliable supply of air for much other than airing bicycle tires.
Go with C02 or a good compressor.

Depends, make it strong enough to take 3000 psi and it will hold a lot of air, but that's not really that feasible, and is fraught with liability issues in the event of an accident.

Why 3000 PSI?

My compressor at home has a 20 gallon tank and a max of 200 PSI and is fine for airing up tires. Obviously youíd need a york or some other compressor on-board to keep the tank full.

Sort of like the Kilby on-board air setup but using the bumper for a tank http://www.kilbyenterprises.com/KE-2200-K.htm


I donít know as much about on-board air as I thought I did so Iíll do bit more research before I decide. In the mean time Iíll keep a roll of quarters handy for the nearest gas station

I recently had been looking at onboard air and CO2 and trying to make a decision. It is a decent chunk of change so I decided to just go pick up one of those $50 Qindustries Max Volume "tsunamie" air compressors that everybody has been talking about

My plan was to just use it for now while I make a descion. It works so well though I have decided to just stick with it as all I do is inflate tires and the occasional raft or air mattress.

I timed it yesterday. It took 18 minutes to fill 4 35" tires from 10 PSI to 30 PSI. That included the time it took for me to unpack, connect, switch between tires and pack back up the compressor!

In the end, I say if you are not trying to run lockers or air tools, save the space and money!

It was just a figure pulled out of the air, but volume would be the big thing. I can't fill my tires with a small 8 gallon tank at 150 psi. Of course if you add a compressor then that would become somewhat moot.

I just think there are much simpler solutions, like a CO2 tank, compressor (with or without a low pressure tank underneath or wherever).

As I don't use it for lockers, C02 is the easiest thing I've used ,mounted on my tire carrier it's always ready togo. Can air up 30 to 40 tires on a 10# bottle. Most of the wheelin trips we do I would often go a long way down the pavement before I found a Quarter machine.

Me too, I only live about 30 miles from you Actually most of the gas station compressors are slower than a $50 wal-mart compressor

This used to be a very popular route for storing air. Marlin of Marlin Crawler fame still stores air in his roll cage.

I don't think the dangers are as pronounced even at 150psi with thick enough (bumper grade) steel. The difficulty is in getting it sealed up then making sure you are not just dumping a lot of water into the tank when you fill it up. Otherwise it will just rust from the inside. Plus to get 20 gallons of air that's one huge bumper. And I think this is where the practice probably faded. It's just too hard to get a great weld all over the place and have a large enough capacity to carry enough air on it's own.

Now with today's portable air pumps, it may once again be a viable option.

Denver has gotten to big, it must be way over 30mi. just to get across town.
