Lets see how far the "no flaming" goes... help

Alright, long story short, I have built dana 60s left from another project, 42 Iroks and wheels for those axles and I'm looking to get back into four wheeling... I'm not far from a place that gets salvaged jeeps and sells them as such. I ran across an 07 two door red JK 3.6L with a 241. Cage, top, door, fenders, etc are all trashed, frame however is amazingly straight. I was planning on building my own cage and comp cutting the rear and flat fendering the front anyhow, so this isn't really a big issue for me. I'm not looking for a show queen, this thing will be wheeled, flopped, and more than likely rolled one or ten times

My question starts where my knowledge stops. I am a fan of leaf sprung suspensions. I have been able to attain rediculous amount of flex with some tricks I use. NO suspension surved the wreck, so all stock mounts will be removed and leaves will be used. No 4 link option at this point. I would say 4 link front 3 link rear and coilovers will be in the future, but I want something built by April.

If one of you wonderful owners could give me some measurments I would greatly appreciate it. What width are the frame rails on JKs? Are they fairly symmetrical all the way back? Meaning, am I going to be able to hang leaves utilizing the factory frame by frenching in hangers or will I have to build some sort of crossmember?

I would straighten as much as possible, get a new grille, windshield and frame and soft top I'd imagine.

Theres a thread going on "the other forum" by a guy who is building a leaf sprung Jk.....

Check it out..not much yet but he promised to update it regularly...

Chrysler builds a military JK that is leaf sprung in the rear, so that should be fairly easy. Not sure how easy the front will be as the frame bends in quite a bit at the front tires.

does it bend in and back out toward the front bumper for steering clearance issues? As long as the frame is the same width or pretty close where I mount both ends of the leaves, the bend in the middle shouldn't matter...

what what is it I hear about axle sensors on these things?

Leaf is far more predictable than coil over. You can feel when a leaf is going to unload. The JK's coil spring suspension is pretty stable and surprisingly flexible for a stock suspension. I am not sure the frame dimensions lend itself well to a real coil over suspension unless you make compromises in stability and travel. But I'm just a casual observer not educated in the ways.

ok.... from the looks of those pictures the front frame section is quite a bit narrower than the rest of the frame... that can fairly easily be overcome with a crossmember much like people use on SAS conversions on any of the small pickups, toyota, ranger, s10, etc...

how bout those axle sensors? Also, it would appear this jeep has the 6 speed. What are the opinions on it?

I believe Currie sells the parts you need to make the wheel sensors work.

I like the six speed.

I searched Currie's site... is it something besides ABS sensors we are talking about? If not, I've got to do new brake lines anyhow, just do away with ABS all together.

yeah, I found that after i asked, thanks though.
the speedo is run off the wheel sensors also, but you may not care about that on the trail.

Wait, doesn't the computer need the tone rings and sensors for more than esp and anti-lock brakes? What about shift points and other junk?

Maybe that's what the Curry kit handles.

I won't care about the speedo, this will be a trail rig... shift points won't be controlled by computer, will be controlled by my left foot, it is a 6 speed. Any other sensors?

I'm not against a curry kit, I just haven't located such a thing. If someone could point me in the right direction, maybe I'll look over it and shed some light on it.

I don't see the computer there. It's drive by wire so that should be a little interesting to work around. If you don't need a speedometer, then you don't need to worry about those tone rings. You'll still need to deal with the engine sensors for the air/fuel mixture to get regulated properly.

picture of just the frame is not the one I'd be getting, the one I'd be getting is a full vehicle down to the T case...suspension, axles, wheel/tire, driveshafts are all missing.

Now that sounds good for what you want.You'll have some stupid lights on your dash (I bet you'll have no problem getting rid of that) but there should be nothing that will effect your performance. Keep us updated with your progress.

yeah, we shall see... Daveys jeep is a couple hours away, I may run up there this weekend and take a closer look at it... I've also got a couple leads on YJs I'll be checking out. We'll see what happens with it... and lights on the dash... that's an easy one
