Gear pattern help

Can anybody tell me how this pattern looks and which way I need to go? D30 front. Backlash is .007. Also, mine didn't have a pinion oil slinger. Is that normal? This is a 17 if that has anything to do with the oil slinger. Thanks ahead for any help.

Depth of pattern looks decent (root to tip), drive side pattern is a little far to the toe end though. Decrease pinion shim .005" to move the pattern closer to the center (to the heel) and readjust carrier shims to maintain backlash. Report back, Ill keep an eye one for updates.

Here's the pattern after removing .005 from the pinion shim. Backlash at .007. I can't seem to help myself when it comes to painting the gears

use imgur or comparable to host the images then use its Direct Link URL for attaching the image. F*ck Photobucket ; it wrecked the Internet forums & its HTML should be publicly burned and a new holiday announced to commemorate its demise.

Sorry, that has nothing to do with you. I just wanted to see dem picts...

yeah, use imgur.com and your images will be visible.

I took your advice and uploaded them to imgur. The forum won't let me post a link since I don't have enough posts. So at the moment i'm stuck.

Looks like it moved back for sure but you aren't there yet. Take another .005" and walk it in slowly. I wouldn't suggest taking more than. 005" at a time until you get real comfortable with adjusting it. Also take photos or transfer the pattern with clear tape and write down what the shim sizes were and what your backlash was so you can visually look back and see what's happening.

Dont apply any new compound just smooth out what you have with the brush.

Thanks for all the help so far. I'll make another change as soon as work permits.

Removed another .005 from pinion shim. Backlash is now at .005. Keep going or is this good?

Do that one more time and remove .005 from pinion shim and open up the backlash a bit. Take it up around .008" and let me see.

Where are you at right now total with pinion shim thickness?

The pattern didn't seem to change this time. Backlash is at .007.

You are starting to get something that resembles a pattern on the coast side though.

When your pattern is favoring the toe on the drive side and to the heel on the coast side it's all pinion shim related. It appears it still needs to be lowered. My last gear job in my jk wound up with a pinion shim at .015" to get a good pattern. That sharp line in your pattern is throwing me off.

Keep posting the pics with shim info.
