I appear to have popped-one off ...

i didnít think to get a darn picture of it but it cannot be that outrageous or uncommon;

do the orange boots on RCV CV axle-shafts pop off ?

Are they a wear item thus why they sell extras ?

Again, Iím kickin myself for not havin my phone for photo with me in garage before I grabbed a pry bar & forced it back on...but, it looks like the little OEM ď dust shield black housing seal that I manage to get on both sides of the housing along with the orange RCV boot, has rescinded ( shriveled? Sheathed ? Slivered ? ) into the housing by popping off the joint and having no axle housing seals once stock one wore out it moved into the axle housing tube up to base of its circumference w/ itís neck buried.

Does this happen and is it just a very bound up turn radius ( possible last weekend ) , the fact thereís no axle housing end seals or is it the boot wearing out ?

one of you has got to had this happen.

Nope; this time I did not search JKOwners.com fir possible past posts cuz I wanted to see why itís so popular to do so.

I've never seen one pop off, but my experience is limited to my axles and a few I've seen in the wild.

Don't worry, they'll crack to let you know when they want to be changed

I don't think they're needed, but you should lose sleep over it anyway

If your RCV boot popped off, I'm guessing a stick kicked up and knocked it off.
EDIT: or you could've pushed it with your housing like you posited there? Dunno how close you get at full lock.

Maybe I'm missing out on an inside joke?, but answered seriously anyway

That happens to me when it's cold out. Almost looks like an inny at times.

Not sure what this orange thing is you're talking about though.

Mine have popped off once, but I think it was because I had just rebuilt it and had over-enthusiastically filled with grease

Rebuild was because I stripped all the splines off the inner passenger side shaft where it enters the RCV bell

you guys are too much. Buncha wise guys....

Thanks @ExWrench for answering.
@snout ... I want to hate you but , that was awesome & I deserved it.

as for the rest of you, here is what I was talkin about....I looked down and where you see the worn/broken but hanging-on little plastic axle seal that comes with the OEM housing in this foto, you see the edge of the RCVs polyurethane orange boot.
Imagine if that boot and the black /slanted ring you see in picture were pushed as far left into the housing as it was possible to go until the round part after the neck stopped it.
I had not seen it ever do that is all. I was able to force it back but just wondered if this was normal. Yes, I have shit tons too much RCV grease in there so may have contributed to the it being able to pop off.

I think it bound-up on a creekbed wall last weekend while I was tire testing and the shuddering of it being slightly bound up may have popped the over greased joint cover off. There was no axle seal to stop it from going further in....

So, with the "watt dafuque?" filled in, here's my 2-part $.02:

  1. Why the fuck did you put that bullshit onto your RCV axle shafts?
  2. Take that shit-trapping bullshit the fuck off of your RCV axle shafts.

heh heh. You and I are going to be pals whether you like it or not.
Seriously though, what happens if you pull that thing off? Aside from the obvious "nobody will know I have RCVs". I always wondered if those things were mandatory.

i dunno....someplace a few years back when I installed the RCVs , I did pursue some questions about the need for axle seals or not. I never got a solid answer so when installing I just said, whatever let’s see if they’ll fit with these on....they did but not seemingly proper. Being plastic I figured they couldn’t hurt and could only keep foreign crap outta the housings at best. I figured at worst, they just get chewed up like they did, obviously.
They musta prevented the boot from sliding in since the other side is still on and not chewed up from spinning like this one. yeah, I don’t think I’ll leave them on, now.

OK. So, my question would be now; do I need to order some end seals ?

were pals already...we both drive one another insane so , yeah. Thatís good foundation, right ? Heh

Hey, just cause I like orange accessories and didnít stealth out my RCV boots like ExWrench so I donít look pretentious and shit, doesnít mean I donít use the stupendously costly monstrosities. ďCan I help it if you see my undergarments are Victoria secret instead of big ole Grannie Panties?Ē said the model?

so, in penance I will go cover them in mud today , ok?

I , honestly, built such stupid strong drivetrain that I was gonna be replacing u joint after I joint, so got these monstrosities. lunchbox lockers tend to bind more with unjointed shafts, too.

Wait...you baited my ass again. Argh....

Leave it off and drive a lot? --> herpesyphillAIDS.

As long as the RCVs are in contact only with sooperdooper moly grease, they'll last a long time.
Lose the grease, or add water and dirt, then pretty soon --> ass cancer of the eye socket.

You referring to tube end seals? No, just take the extra bullshit out of there and make sure your inner axle seals are OK.

You referring to RCV seals? I replaced mine when it cracked open. If yours pops back on and stays on, I'd fugginrunnit

funny enough, back when the 90ís were young & , possibly daily but I wonít say for certain, Iíd find myself - quite literally - down in Da Hood in the S.Western side of the A-T-L ( Bankhead bounce, anyone?) for ahem, possibly nefarious reasons , the homies I would be Ď dealiní with would always refer to them as ,Ē Six-UpĒ* ; as in, ď yo, N*gga; da Bluff be hoppiní wif six-up all ovaĒ or, ď yo, you cracka muthfucka , six-up be watchin yo ass this very minute..see dat van ova there? ...you best eat dat shit fo they run you & popo yo butt down ta lockup....Ē...but, I could be makin all that up. Iím not.

(metro Fulton county cops had 3 LEDs per side on the light bars on the roof = six upĒ)

That's what causes bent axles. You see that gets wedged between the shaft and the axle tube and then it has nowhere to go but to bend the axle tube in order for it to make room for itself.

Iíve had to replace a few of them over the years. I find when it gets cold and if they get hit with ice or something on the road they crack.

man. Just when I think I'm startin'to understand parts and their interaction with real world physics, along comes sage advise you have thought I'd have picked-up on...it's practically starin me in the face;I mean how much longer could those fancy orange booted shafts have held-out against bein sheared-off by those rings, ya think?

you sayin that suddenly reminded me; the weekend prior I had the hubs & the wheels submerged in frigid-cold, glacial Tennessee spring waters...('glacial' here means it is not run-off from a hog farm)

I bet the boot popped-off once they warmed back up in garage l8r after that or somethin...best image I could find...wrong side but they were all covered at one time or the other...

edit: I am now betting the submersion and deep water all that day is why either a sensor or it's wiring has gone bad and all my ttriad of traction lights are solid. I over extended a senor wire for wheel speed thingy or shot one of the sensors themself. Thanks for mentioning cold,. dude ; it could explain several suddn glitches in my matrix.

It did.

In case anyone cares, I popped that boot back on after last post and it has held since. I think the freezing water , too much RCV grease and acute turn angle caused it to come off is all ...just to update.
