pa lift laws?

After a little harassment from one of our local boys in blue I have done some research but have seen many different answers to what the law actually states in Pa. The cop said he wouldn't write me a ticket because he wasn't sure what the law actually sez.he also assured me that there were 2 officers that had been to class to specifically learn the law for modified vehicles and they would be more than happy to write me a ticket. So does anyone know if its bumper or frame height the use? Both my front and rear bumper measure 28" to the bottom of the bumper and my frame height is 23 & 1/4.

bumper. i got pulled for it on my yj, bu ti dont remember the height allowed. the problem is that in pa the bumper height goes by vehicle type (truck can be higher than cars) and a jeep is registered as a station wagon so its considered a car. although i did get a fix it ticket for it, when i took the jeep to the police station the cop that was there said it was a stupid ticket and the cop that gave it to me was a asshole. but my jeep did look awesome with the 18's off my suburban and rubber bands for tires .

Thanks benfoo. I guess im not even close to legal. Maybe I will order a set of 3 1/2" springs to get it down a little and hope it doesn't draw quite as much attention. Besides the 37's look small with the 5 1/2"

Ok I think I get it now. The second part is what was repealed? And the 1st part you posted is what's actually current? Im at 28" exactly at the bottom of the rear bumper and around 28 & 1/2 on the front. I netted way over 5.5" from my lift( mine sits a good inch higher than my buddies with the same tires and the 6.5" bds. So I may still drop down to the 3.5" springs just to get it down a little.

I try not to run more lift than I need for two purposes. 1) COG 2) Popo

Althought you're technically still legal, in areas where cops have nothing else to do, you'll prob get hasseled due to being close.......

I agree with that. Like I said, I netted around 7- 7.5" out of the lift. I hoped it would settle some but that hasn't happened and its been 4 months. So I will be looking into RK's 3.5" springs. Or maybe someone's else's 3" or 4". Thanks for the good info, much appreciated

Just got confirmation from an inspection tec that 30" is indeed the magic number in pa. Thanks to benfoo for digging up the info in the 1st place and to jeffsjk for confirming it. Now if we could just get back to having some tire sticking out I would be golden.

Wish I had a spare set of 35's for that purpose. I do have my oe wheels and tires. It would be sweet looking with the 245/70/16's

from what i been pulled over for and told is no tread can exists beyond the flare. Do the ol quarter on the fender drop tricks and if it hits actual tread (not sidewall) you are illegal. And i have had cops do it in the past.

Legally speaking, yes the tread must be covered. However, ive yet to be pulled over for my tires sticking out <knock on wood>. Ive had police follow me, rolling beside me and generally keeping an eye on me. But, im of the notion that if you dont do anything retarded like a moving violation and/or cause an accident the really dont care or have the time too.

Inspection is a different animal. Thats why I held onto my 35s, for inspection. Even if someone were to pass my jeep, I really dont want to put them in that tough place as if they DO pass it with current wheel/tires on then it could come back to bite them in the ass. ie they loose their inspection liscense. Just saying....

Thanks Jeff's jk. Unfortunately im on the other end of the state otherwise I would take you up on that offer. I guess I will have to add the wide xenons to winter project list. With no spacers they should just cover the tires.
