My new tire carrier

I had a member make this for me. Pretty simple design, opens with the tailgate and is very solid. The tire is closer to the tailgate and raised up a little. It's also adjustable for different backspacing. I cut up the stock brake light and added it.

I know I already told you how happy I have been with mine and no more breaking stock tire carriers. I've had mine for over 6 months and have no complaints at all.

Looks great, but my only concern is the weight still being on the tailgate hinges.

x2.
I'm still looking for a cheap carrier without bumper to remove my spare from the tailgate.
I read all the threads related to tire carriers and still did not find what I'm looking for...
I'd go with an Aberle if I could.

The weight is still on the hinges, but from what I understand is the problem is with the tailgate twisting. This setup attaches to the tailgate and hinges preventing the tailgate from twisting.

I'm the guy who built this for T and WeGo4x4.

The problem with the tailgate is not the hinges but the gate itself. Chryslers decision to use what seems to be 24 or 26 gauge steel for the Jk skin is the problem.

There is sub structure bracing in the tailgate but not nearly enough. The problem lies in the area between the hinges and the stock carrier. The hinges act kinda like a independent suspension. as the tailgate flexes from the weight of the tire, the hinges will flex independently. Imagine your control arms they are free to move with a lot of twist, now hook up your sway bars and the twisting is now not nearly as much.

What Ive done is make a Exo Skeleton for the tail gate. Ive connected the two hinges together so now they cannot flex independently. also i connected the vertical hinge bar to the carrier with two horizontal bars, this helps transfer the load so that the weight of the tire is not directly in the center of the gate. Now the load goes from the center of the gate along the tubes to the hinges that are 3/16 steel and are mounted to a super strong substructure behind the body.

The carrier is the best answer for those who want to carry 35 or 37 without having a separate carrier to open or having to buy a aftermarket bumper.

The tire now sits just a little bit closer to the Jeep and about 3inches higher for a better departure angle.

How would you compare it to the Hanson? I am also looking for a carrier for a 37".

Clayton 4.5" suspension, 37" KM2 tires, Mojave wheels, Tom Woods front and rear drive shafts
Clayton/AEV high steering kit, Teraflex SS, Poly inner axle sleeve/C-gussets/lower control arm skids, River Raider Breather Hose Extension Kit

The only issue I had with the Or-Fab carrier is it doesn't open with the tailgate.
