Question What Exactly is that loud "WHACK" when I shift??

I've heard people say their JK does it, some since new, but what exactly is it that makes the loud WHACK when you shift? I've been all over this today, retorking the control arms, track bars, changed the tranny fluid, still shifts like crap, and stll makes that Friggin WHACK when you shift, usually in the lower gears, almost sounds like a spent chain in a transfer case, close as I can describe it.

Driveline slop really. Slop in the driveshafts/differential ring/pinion, maybe t-case related like you mentioned. However mine doesn't really do that unless I release the clutch too quickly or am in Rubi-low. Seems like you have issues with yours that I've really yet to experience.

Mine shifts very smooth and quiet if I am remotely trying to drive it smooth.

Not sure if its the same, but with everything being "unserviceable" under there, Im having a similar issue, but mine is an unlimited rubicon with an automatic. I can't narrow it down yet, first thought was control arm sticking when the weight shifted when I turn and accellerate from a stop. Now Im thinking something with brakes? Can't narrow it down yet. 40K miles and it seems to only to happen when Im transferring from brake to accelorator and turning at the same time...could be anything if it's even the same thing!

RubiRed Unlimited, if you're thinking it's something loose, which sounds more like your issue, try getting under it and have someone rock it back and forth in park, or even try with the E brake on in 4WL, and watch all the mounting points first, control arems, track bars, sways, you may be able to isolate it. Mine I believe is more driveline related.

I get a heavy clunk from the front right hand side. I've been told its the axle touching the side of the axle tube. It makes sense as everything else is tight and serviceable.

this is more of a Whack or a Clack sound, it does sound like slop, just don't know with 20k on it why anything should be sloppy

Have you turned a driveshaft by hand, ever, and felt the slop? Slop in the t-case and ring and pinion backlash are necessary. There is a good amount there, and if you're a little jittery on the clutch can potentially make noise if the vehicle slows enough between shifts then whacks into the next gear.

I've driven about 7 JK's now and had 4 that the shop has owned...no loud "whack" noises in any of them...I definitely wouldn't be writing it off as nothing. Usually that kind of stuff is loose suspension or bad bushings somewhere.

I no longer work with Warrior. I am now working with The FIRM.

That loud whack is your palm hitting your forehead as you realize you should have gotten the auto.

Totally different vehicle, but I had a 95 escort that did that, but only second to third. (maybe first to second, I forget)

It was a broken transmission mount.

Check those, apparently the escort's broke because I was learning to drive on it, and had a bat habit of accidentally powershifting which broke the mount.

It's driveline slop, lots of manuals will do it, and has nothing to do with mileage.

Rarely do I notice it unless I'm in low range.

By "auto" you mean those things that overheat and catch on fire?

I'm not really an Auto person, just me, I am shifting somewhat gingerly because the way the trany is behaving, shifting rough, have to push it in gear, the lift only has 3,000 on it, and I went over every nut and bolt the other night, all looks good. I will go over the mounts though and see if I notice anything there.
