Oscar the Grouch Build Thread

I finally became a Wrangler owner in October of last year. I've had three other Jeeps prior to this one. I purchased a 2008 Wrangler Unlimited Sahara.

The Jeep was mostly stock except a few cosmetic things, such as tail light guards and a gas cap cover. It had 77k miles on it and I'm the third owner. It is in great condition and the dealer had just replaced all the fluids, brake pads, and spark plugs.

Here it is the day after I bought it.

I didn't plan on modding the Jeep at all. I've spent way too much money on the previous Jeeps only to sell them shortly after.

That all changed when I received a spacer lift free from Reddit. There was a Jeep Christmas exchange and I received the kit for free from a generous person. I wanted longer shocks so I purchased Bilstein 5100s.

The wife said I really needed to get bigger tires. She said it looked funny with the stock 32s. So of course I started tire shopping. I wanted to keep the expense low, so I wasn't planning on wheels just yet. So that meant I had to look for a tire that fit an 18" wheel.

I've always heard good reviews about the Goodyear Duratrac so I found a set of 4 275-70-18. Name: ImageUploadedByAutoGuide1434915862.623736.jpg

They rubbed at full turn so a couple weeks later I ended up buying wheels as well. Name: ImageUploadedByAutoGuide1434915918.961868.jpg

Next I wanted to get front and rear bumpers. For the rear I found a deal on a EBay bumper made by DV8. This bumper is very well made and I was very happy with how well it was packaged. It also arrived in less than 5 days. My only complaint is that it's pretty heavy at 75lbs.

For the front bumper, I had a buddy make one for me. Name: ImageUploadedByAutoGuide1434916149.874155.jpg

Next I wanted to add a little more lighting for off-road situations. I found a set of KC Lights on Amazon. My friend had a spare set of mounts for the windshield.

I had been looking for a soft top for a while. Just by luck I found a guy selling a soft top on Craigslist for $400. It was a year old Bestop Supertop and in amazing condition. He also gave me a window bag as well as a spiderweb shade.

I didn't like the spiderweb shade as when the top was on it hit my head. So I sold it.

I took my first off-roading trip at Uwharrie. Had a great time and only broke my side steps. No one took pictures of me, so I took some of the others. The last pic was to show how difficult one of the trails was.

My old Patriot had this same stereo. I found this on eBay for $200. It's nice having all my music already in the Jeep.

I changed up the Sahara decals just to make it a little different.

After weeks of going without side steps. I bought these off a friend. The plan was to bedline them. I was considering rock rails, but I need something with a step for now.

After putting it off for a while I bed lined the rails.

One day driving home from work, we had a horrible rainstorm. It was like driving through a hurricane. Right as a drove out of the storm.. This happened.

I was extremely lucky that the storm had passed. I'm not sure how it happened either. Just popped off and smacked the windshield and disappeared.

The next item I had been looking at was new headlights. It was a debate between truck lite or the MRL Rogue Headlight. I like the look of the rogue better, and living in SC I don't have to worry about inspections.

I bought a set from Justice Off-road for $250. I had them installed and aimed lower as they are really bright!

I don't have a picture but I bought a matching 5th wheel and tire for the Jeep.

This brings me up to yesterday. I had wanted to get a better lift. The weight of the bumpers started to sag the stock coils. I ended up purchasing a 2.5" teraflex coil lift from justice off-road.

This kit has the rear track at bracket. I also added front quick disconnects as well.

Currently I have 92,668 miles on the Jeep. I'm the third owner and I know some of the previous maintenance done on the Jeep. I wasn't sure if the plugs had been changed before I bought it or not.

I decided to order new Bosch Double Platinum plugs from Rock Auto. The plugs came last Friday and I decided it was going to be a weekend project.

I saw that the drive side plugs were easy to get to. I changed those plugs in around 5 minutes. The old plugs didn't look bad (or so I thought) but I decided to change them anyway.

The passenger side is a whole different story. While trying to change #3 the wire broke and left the connector on top of the plug. I've since found out that it's a common issue. When I pulled the plug and checked the gap.. There was no gap. The top of the plug was bent down closing the gap. I never noticed any issues driving, so I'm not sure when that happened.

Plug 5 was a total nightmare trying to get to. I ended up getting the plug out but it took a long time. It's probably not possible to get the plug out without some sort of socket joint.

I ended up replacing all six wires as well. I started the Jeep up and it runs perfectly.

What do you think of those headlights? Any flicker?

Were they a direct plug and play with the JK?
