Intake Poll

ok so after searching and reading posts, i cant find a general consensus on these things, so hopefully this will answer it once and for all (at least for me). Which one? Thanks for the help!

Edit: Currently I have a drop in K&N. Also, ive got a super 44 muffler, so even if the intake makes the exhaust sound better (not sure if this would happen), I could consider it worth it. I know its the 3.8 so Im not expecting much.

Life's hard. It's harder if you're stupid.

haven't seen a good write up about the jk intakes yet. Jp mag did a good article about the tj cais which explains the difference between filter materials such as paper, cotton, synthetic.

most of the difference will be air flow through the intake pipe.

i think the most important part is waterproofness, you need a good box under the hood to keep water out and draw cold air from outside the engine compartment.I won't drop a dime on a cai until they've been around awhile and it will be synthetic for durability and ease of maintainance.

got Jeep got stuff, never enough of the right stuff tho

Am I in deep enough yet?

I voted Airaid just because that is what I have, but I chose it because it was by far the best deal at the time. IMO there isn't going to be a big difference in any of them in performance, and the increase is minimal. I do hope to fab an airbox for the Airaid that will allow me to add a snorkle.

it will make the engine alot louder under acceleration.

I got an airraid. I've had it for about 2 years now and have no complaints using it.

If you are looking for "performance", i'd suggest getting a superchips programmer first.

Don't look for any of them to make a real difference in performance. The engine just doesn't have much room for this to do anything significant. It will sound better though. It will sound like something might be happening under the hood, but it's not.

It will increase the possibility of hydrolock. That's a bad thing! If you are set of getting one- I suggest Rusty's Offroad K&N kit. It is the cheapest version I know of on the market. It does as well as any of the others. It does not have a box to separate it from the engine compartment, but that is easy to fab up if you have some imagination. I had this on my last JK but haven't bothered to get one on my current Jeep.

X2 on Grant211 suggesting the Superchips programmer!!!

save your money, get a snorkel.

I had a Volant, made it sound cool, but also exposed the filter to water mud and anything else that could fit through the holes. I bought it for $300, sold it for $100.

save your money and buy a snorkel

that is the ultimate goal. i know the exhaust and intake wont do much, but i wanted to do the intake and exhaust first, then get the superchips. i figure it wouldnt hurt to have all that done before hand to maybe get the most out of the programmer. maybe itll be a late christmas gift to myself

had an airaid on for a few months
CAI makes it SOUND faster and may fool you into thinking it did something for performance.
mine is now sitting on a shelf in the shop in favor of a snorkel

plus too many hydrolocked JKs to up the risk factor for no appreciable gains to me.

Had an AEM for awhile but switched back to the stock air box with a K&N drop in filter.

After you start wheeling you will find out, that with an aftermarket air intake you are always worried about sucking in water.

Yes, the best design I have seen. Real CAI with water intake addressed like a Jeep. I just wish I had the mad skills to pull this off. Kit in the future? I am in line for this one.

u might THINK you'll get your moneys worth out of a CAI and exhaust as far as power after you add the superchips but it will JUST be the superchips that you are getting the power from.

Why dont you listen to everyone here and NOT WASTE your money? I dont get it

Had an Air Raid on my rig for a month or two. I bought it on the cheap to try it out. Waste of money. Save your $ for a snorkel.

Skip intake and go with a snorkel which will do the same as an intake by bringing in the coolest air and a more direct flow of air. Plus you will be able to go underwater!

I had the AirAid and well I kinda liked the sound, but didn't notice any real performance gains. I now have a RIPP SC and it comes with a similiar cone filter, but lately I'm seeing more and more "hydrolocked" threads just from fairly mild offroading and it's getting me paranoid. Now, I have property I take my JK onto that requires 4wd and it gets muddy sometimes, and at least a few times a year I drive through streets (not streams) that are pretty well flooded. 99.9% of my Jeep's time is spent on the pavement and it's definitely set up for that vs. set up for real offroading. Would it seem too "poseurish" to get a River Raider Snorkel as more of an insurance plan than because I'm often fording some kind of water at an ORV park?

Either way, the River Raider Snorkel is the only compatible one with my supercharger and it also happens to be the best looking one IMO. Plus River Raider happens to be located not all that far from me in Chambersburg where I have a friend anyway and a road trip to get a snorkel and check out their latest project seems like a fun way to spend a day.

I noticed a little power from the mbrp exhuast. As for cai... I took the river raider box setup and made it work just like a cai... I honestly didn't notice any difference... But maybe it's there... But i can make that box waterproof in about 1 minute and run it with my snorkel. I got it mostly though to have an open intake and not get tons of sand and leaves in the stock box when driving in the desert.

It would be nice to hear a Superchips representative chime in on this... they are the experts and upon purchasing my aftermarket chip the calibration set request information on intake. Why? IF it has no benefit. I do have the K&N which was on it when purchased, but would have been added anyway. Nonetheless, it is still somewhat exposed to the engine heat. Hood louvers have been purchased and install is forthcoming.

My next consideration... a small hood scoop feed the intake 'box'. Hydrolock... possible, but not likely... sitting up too high and I don't plunge in.

But I stay away form water and like the open filter design

I ran the Airaid for a while and it was fine but I had the chance to get a S&b for free and im telling you I am much happier with the S&b
