5.3 LS swap with NSG370 6MT

I am about to swap an Aluminum block LC9 5.3 into my 2010 JKUR. I am staying with the NSG370 by swapping to an '06 TJ trans and using the Novak adapter. The TJ NSG has a larger front housing that will fit an LS with the adapter. The swap will be done by my race car mechanic. He is a very talented mechanic, engine builder, fabricator, etc.

I decided to go with a Novak "kit" for this swap. The kit is not quite as complete as Motech or JSS as it does not include brackets for the Jeep accessories. But, with headers, clutch and related parts, total for Novak was ~$3700 or about $3k cheaper than the others when you factor in buying all the Novak specific stuff for the Manual trans with the cost of the other kits w/o the auto trans stuff . Fabbing our own brackets will cost under $500. That said, I searched and cant find anyone else that has used a Novak kit in a JK -lots TJ, YJ and CJ swaps... so breaking some new ground perhaps.

Anyway, the LC9 is getting pulled by the wrecker now and has 24k miles and was from a 2010 Silverado. I get the engine tomorrow and will ship the ECU and harness to Novak for modification. We are doing a AFM and DOD delete as those don't work well with a Manual Trans. Also will put in a mild cam that does not sacrifice much low end TQ.

The NSG was bought on Flee Bay and has 40k miles.

The NSG is only rated for 272TQ, so we are outside that with 335TQ from a stock 5.3. depending on the cam, peak TQ will increase 15-20TQ. I am not worried as it seems there are many boosted 3.8 and 3.6 that are pushing past 272TQ with out problems.

For Cruise Control, we are going to use an after market Rostra set up.

The swap hopefully start late next week with removal of the "turd". "You can polish a turd, but at the end of the day it is still a turd!"

I will update as things progress.

Sounds like a pretty nice swap to me. A V8 really makes the JK a great vehicle.

I have looked into this as well. I plan on doing my swap next year with the 5.3, and either the NSG370 or a built up AX15 with a R151 first gear installed. I am hoping to do the entire swap for around $5-6k.

What are your plans for electrical? I have debated completely requiring the whole vehicle with aftermarket gauges or getting MoTech or JSS to reflash the computer.

Ringer: all the gauges work with Novak's kit. I am sending them the LS ecu to tune it and the LS harness to modify it.
A couple things that don't integrate - the CEL will be on. They have an LED light in kit the works with LS ecu for CEL. We will try to tie the ls ecu to factory light if we can. The traction control won't work properly and will have warning light on as they can't tie into the Ls electronic throttle. Stability control will still work.
Call Novak as they will sell you any part individually. The kit was actually quoted to me as individual part numbers with prices.

Where in Alberta are you located? I'm in Calgary and did the Motech LS swap with a 2012 LC9 and 6L80. It would be nice to know a good mechanic to help out once in a while. I keep thinking I should drive down to Vegas and get Robbie to go over my work and fine tune it if needed but that's a 24 hour drive.

I would not recommend using an NSG370 behind a 5.3
Talk to the guys at Bruiser conversions. They were telling me that the 4bt was breaking them at idle when turning the engine off. They were telling me that the NSG370 is weaker than both the AX-15 and 3550 transmissions. Also keep in mind the weight of the JKU. I would not recommend using an AX-15 or 3550 either.

For other options, look at a "Terminator" AX-15. They are rated for 385hp.

Do the Nv4500. That thin will take a beating the you will have a 6:1granny gear or a nv5600 the jku has more than enough room to run those trannys

I was concerned about the strength of the NSG370, but Novak said it works very well with a mild 5.3. I also looked at the TQ rating of Ripp supercharged 3.8 and 3.6s and I did not see any posts of guys failing NSG370s with these set ups. If I was building a hard core rock crawler I would go with something stronger...

I looked at this option, but I am a two door with flat belly, and would prefer to keep my Rubi t case. I can build a 4.3 1st gear AX15 rated for 385 hp. I would think that it would fit much better, and should hold up just fine to a mild 5.3.

Wow, long over due for an update. The swap started a couple months later than I hoped, but it is coming together. My mechanic has not been able to work on it full time. At this point all that is left is the wiring and plumbing. Once he is done he will provide a write up for me.

A few highlights. We deleted the DOD on the 5.3 and installed a pretty stout cam from comp cams. http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/c...?csid=1620&sb=
Should provide around 80hp and 50tq gains in peak power with 100hp on the top end and a minimal loss in low end tq due to the VVT. TQ starts to gain around 2000rpm. Here are the cam specs:
http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/c...csid=1620&sb=2

We did have a few issues with Novak kit. First they were slow to modify the wiring harness.
Then the parts for the manual Trans were not right as the input shaft was short of the pilot bushing.
The instructions were not very good

The kit does not come with PS or AC brackets. We tried to source from Motech, but after a few emails and no replies my mechanic fabbed some up.

Anyways, should be done this week. I have a few other mods getting done before I pick it up (rear axles, aux lights, camera, e locker switches, AEV CHMSL)

Why don't you just use the GM accessories? on the front of the engine.

We did not use the GM accessories as we would have to fab hose and the potential for different pressures or volumes between the two systems.

Do you use the GM accessories, JSS? I think Motech uses jeep accessories.

Yes we use the GM Accessories, no adapting. Less chance for belt problems and easier for getting parts, because it is all GM. We have not seen any problems with the AC or the Alternator. I have been driving our GuineaPig for 2 years and have had no problems.

Still not done. Went to wire up the throttle and Novak forgot the harness for that. Been waiting close to two weeks for it...

subscribed....I got a new uncle that knows how to fab and from what i'm seeing, i might be able to swing this. I know i'd love to do this instead of regear the axles anyway.......plus i miss the sound of my old 5.3

Update... The drive by wire harness finally arrived a week ago from Novak, but one of the plugs was wrong and there were two connectors with the same number.

That was sorted out this week and everything was plugged in, the engine was turned over to ensure proper belt fit, then the rad and grill installed. Then the keys were locked in the the Jeep...

Almost there.

It should be finished up in the first week of the new year.

I'm just wondering how well the trans is gonna take the engine. I know people have done the swap before on other vehicles, but.. it still always seems to be a questionable swap. Can't wait for you to have it running for a good 6 months & see how it holds up.
