Loud chatter in Left Front in 4WD

Just went out to pull a friend out of a little mud hole. I had good footing so I tried first in 2WD. Couldn't get him out so I moved it to 4LO and pulled him out.

When I was pulling in 4LO I heard a very loud chatter that sounded like it was coming from the left front. When I moved it back to 2WD the chatter goes away..... mostly. When driving down the road you can hear a faint chatter like noise if you listen for it.

Axel U-joint has no noticeable play or movement.

Any ideas?

Driveshaft U-joints don't have any play.

I'll pull the front differential plug and check the oil.

I get a sound similar to yours under heavy load on incline. Only happens in 4wd lo. If I feather the throttle it goes away temporarily and comes back. Went through all of the checks and couldn't find anything to suggest a cause. To me it sounds like marbles in a coffee can.

2011 JK with 32's, 3.73's and an auto. Only 17K miles and light wheeling so far with someone very easy on the skinny pedal.

I have been kind of thinking my noise might be pinging because i've mostly encountered it during hill climbs at altitude above 5000 feet.

Mine pinged like crazy. Only when cold now. Seems to quite with shell gas and a bottle of Techron every once in a while.

I read it again. Check the exhaust cross over pipe. The heat shield can pop its weld joints and chatter around.
