Need your help - Two Minutes to Stop 13 Million Acre Closure

IMPORTANT ALERT TO REVERSE CLOSURE OF PUBLIC LANDS

From "Save The Trails":

I thought you would want to hear about President Obama's recently released, but little known America Great Outdoor Initiative, which has the potential to lock you out of millions of acres of public lands, as well as take away your private property rights. The good news is this Initiative has just started and if lots of people like you speak up and take two minutes to send letters it can be turned around.
Thanks for taking action.

Chris Horgan and your friends at Save the Trails

America Great Outdoors Initiative seeks to Close Public Lands-

Due to the leak of internal White House document

http://savethetrails.us/DOI-InternalDocument-s.pdf

showing secret plans to designate 13 million of acres as National Monuments and Wilderness without public input, President Obama announced on 3/29/10 his America Great Outdoor Initiative to encourage local involvement in the crafting of this new plan, which will supposedly encourage urban youth to get out and enjoy the Backcountry and preserve access to the outdoors.

This is more Washington double talk since locking the majority of the public out of their public lands via Wilderness and Monument designation will discourage the most popular forms of outdoor recreation, such as Off Road Vehicle use and in many cases Mountain Bikes. This will clearly discourage the public from enjoying the backcountry. There is just no way reducing access can be preserving access.

President Obama held a last minute conference on 4/16/10 in Washington DC to encourage local partnerships, but after polling over 60 local organizations we could not find one who had been invited. The folks who were invited and who are partners, were those who support closure of public lands such as Sierra Club, Wilderness Society etc.

Of particular interest is Government Landscape Wide Planning (including private property) and designation of Wildlife Corridors, as proposed in the President's Outdoors Initiative, are also key elements in the United Nations Wildlands Project, which seeks to make 50% of America off limits to humans (Yellow and Red on the Wildlands Project map http://www.savethetrails.us/Default.aspx?PetitionID=47). It appears that all those invited to the DC Conference also support the Wildlands Project. If you don't then ACT NOW by clicking here and go to the bottom to send your letter!
http://www.savethetrails.us/Default.aspx?PetitionID=47

TAKE ACTION NOW!!

SEND YOUR LETTERS IN JUST TWO MINUTES HERE

to create your two minute Outdoor Initiative letter or use the link below
http://www.savethetrails.us/Default.aspx?PetitionID=47

The good part is this Initiative has just started and you can help get it back on track by sending a letter using our two minute letter generators link above

After you send your letter please see the Take Back Your Public Lands-Extra Credit at the end of this email

The goals of the America Great Outdoors Initiative is laudable, to encourage local involvement, increase access to public lands and Encourage the Public to get our in the Backcountry, but as you may have guessed the proposed policies are heading in the opposite direction.

The President has asked for public involvement, so let’s take advantage of his offer and speak up to ensure this Initiative stay true to the goals. Please send your letter now and ask your friends to send a letter too

You can read more about the United Nations Wildlands Project and see the map at
http://www.savethetrails.us/WildlandsProject.html

You can read the President’s 4 page outline for this Outdoor Initiative at
http://doi.gov/americasgreatoutdoors...-mem-rel-2.pdf

TAKE BACK YOUR PUBLIC LANDS-EXTRA CREDIT

The President has created a website where the public can post topics and comment on his proposed America Great Outdoor Initiative.

http://cts.vresp.com/c/?SaveTheTrail...691/adf8cc9064

Normally this kind of forum is taken over by the vocal minority who seem to favor closure, but lately the silent majority, which probably includes you, have been speaking up. However we need more people to comment or we will lose ground. Please take a few minutes to register and most importantly vote for topics you support. Threads have been started on the topics of removing financial barriers, improving agency accountability, sustaining rural communities, and promoting forest health among many other good ideas. You can also post your own comments.
Remember the world is run by those who speak up.

Link to Presidents Outdoor Initiative Blog http://cts.vresp.com/c/?SaveTheTrail...691/70c9f92bee

Please Forward this to everyone who wants to preserve public access to public lands and protect property rights

Ok let me help you a little more. Go to google, perhaps you have heard of it?
type in something such as "american antiquities act of 1906"
then do a little reading and educate yourself about it. When you read the history of it, and realize the power it grants the President, you will see why this is an issue of concern for off roading interests.

Wow welcome to JKO. Perhaps you should get to know the community before calling names

And maybe try doing a little independent research or show proof of your claims before blasting away in the Land Use forum.

So you want me to show proof against a fabricated "leaked white house" memo.lol

I don't need to fabricate anything. There are no closures slated in the bill.

The only issue that remains is of a fabricated "leaked White house memo". The only other issue is whether you are stupid enough to believe it.

So, do you work for the White House Propaganda Department, or do you just spend your days scouring the internet for places to play Internet Tough Guy? You could have argued your point without all the name calling if you weren't trying to deflect attention from the real issues. Have some more Kool-Aid dipshit.

ok, I am typing very slowly now......
the "leaked memo" whether fact or not, prompted a discussion of potential land closures.
Searching www.whitehouse.org shows that there are millions of acres that the current administration is looking at for possible Monument status.
The American Antiquities Act of 1906 gives the President broad powers to designate lands as Monument status.
Searching google for "American Antiquities Act of 1906" brings many sources of information about past Presidents using the act to put lands in Monument status effectively closing most of them to motorized travel.
That brings us to today. The time to let our elected officials know our opinions is now, before decisions are made.
Hopefully that clears it up for you.

p.s. If the "only" issue that remains is the memo, how can there be another issue such as my supposed stupidity? I can see that English is not your first language so I will type yet more slowly for you.

Obama Monument Update

OBAMA NATIONAL MONUMENT UPDATE
REQUEST FOR RECORDS VOTED DOWN
TRANSPARENCY IN OBAMA ADMINISTRATION IN QUESTION

Dear BRC Action Alert Subscriber,

On Wednesday, May 5, 2010, the House Natural Resources Committee voted down (by a margin of 20-22) a motion offered by Ranking Member Doc Hastings (WA) to favorably report H. Res. 1245 out of Committee. The Resolution is an attempt by Congress to require the Secretary of the Interior to turn over specific information related to potential National Monument designations.

Interestingly, the Department of the Interior (DOI) delivered nearly 400 pages of emails to the Committee less than 24 hours before it was scheduled to vote on the Resolution. However, the agency withheld some 2,016 pages of additional documents directly related to potential Monument designations.

The controversy began with the discovery of an internal DOI document labeled "NOT FOR RELEASE" which details plans for 14 new or expanded national monument designations, totaling some 13 million acres of public and private land.

Rep. Hastings, who has led a bi-partisan effort to require the DOI to disclose information said: “When the federal government is discussing the lockup of 13 million acres of public lands with the stroke of the President’s pen, the American people have a right to know what their government is doing. I encourage my Democrat colleagues to help the Obama Administration adhere to their claims of openness and transparency by bringing this resolution to a vote on the floor of the full House,” said Hastings. “If this Resolution is not brought to the House floor in a timely manner, I promise this Committee will see plenty of similar Resolutions until the Department of Interior reveals what they are hiding.”

House rules provide that the Democrat Majority on the Committee had 14 legislative days to report the Resolution of Inquiry or it would have been eligible to be brought to the Floor of the House of Representatives for a vote as a Privileged Resolution. A future Floor vote on the Resolution is now entirely subject to the will of the Majority.

Meanwhile, legislation that would remove a President's unilateral authority to designate National Monuments is moving slowly. The bill is titled the Preserve Land Freedom For Americans Act of 2010 (HR 4996) is sponsored by North Carolina Rep. Virginia Foxx. HR 4996 was referred to the House Committee on Natural Resources on April 13, 2010. BRC is encouraging our members to contact their Representatives and encourage them to co-sponsor HR 4996 and work for its passage into law.

We will continue to keep you updated on this and other important issues.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact BRC.

UPDATE

BAD NEWS....

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010...est=latestnews

Quote:
A leaked partial document produced by the Bureau of Land Management and obtained by Fox News suggests the Obama administration is considering a plan to lock up 13 million acres of land -- and the Department of Interior is refusing to answer questions.

First, a little background: The federal government owns about one-third of the land in the United States -- most of it in western states. For example, 84 percent of Nevada is owned by Uncle Sam.

But the government leases large parcels of federal land for all sorts of things -- grazing, mining, exploration, recreation.

Those commercial activities create jobs and tax revenue for the states. Tax revenues from commercial activity on federal lands often pays for local schools. However, with the single stroke of his pen, President Obama can use the Antiquities of Act of 1906 to turn federal land into National Monuments.

That would effectively lock up the land from any kind of private use or development.

The plan may actually be more than 13 million acres. Republican members of the House have asked for the rest of the memo, but the Department of the Interior is refusing to hand it over.

Rep. Doc Hastings, R-Wash., said he is worried.

"When the administration is, for lack of a better word, stiffing us -- you know that causes concern," Hastings said during a hallway interview on Capitol Hill. "We do have responsibilities to our constituents to make sure that when there is a huge change on federal lands in their area, that they are part of that process. We are afraid that that process is going to be taken away from them and that's why we're asking for these documents."

Republicans on the House Natural Resources Committee were unable to garner Democratic support for a resolution requiring the Department of Interior to produce some 2,000 documents it has on this matter.

The DOI did cough up 300 e-mails that Republicans say do not reveal very much.

When contacted by Fox News, the department's press secretary hinted that the GOP request is under further review.

"This is an on-going process," Kendra Barkoff wrote. "We may supplement this response as the process is concluded."

There are those who believe these lands are precious -- and should be locked up from development. But in western states this is controversial.

Western state governors are worried that the Obama administration is going to do this quickly and quietly -- without public hearings. They want the process to be more transparent. But for now, those documents are being tightly held by the Obama Department of Interior.
