Jeep lifetime warranties Gov backed

Just in......

Important Announcement to all Chrysler Customers

In these difficult economic times, it is important to have peace of mind when
making a significant purchase, like a new car or truck. At Chrysler, we are happy
to inform our customers that on Monday, March 30th, President Obama
announced a plan to provide a government backed "Warranty Commitment
Program".
In summary, the key points from the President's announcement are:
• Government backing of warranty starts with vehicles purchased on or after
March 30, 2009.
• The program will cover the participating manufacturer's warranty on every
new car sold during the company's restructuring period.
• If you buy a new Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge vehicle during this restructuring
period you will be eligible.
• You do not have to do anything to receive the U.S. commitment to your
warranty, it is automatic.
• The U.S. Treasury will back your warranty, and will commit to honoring the
warranty in the event that the manufacturer cannot.
Today Chrysler has the best quality in its 84 year history. 73% of our vehicles
have improved fuel efficiency over the past year. There has never been a better
time than today to purchase a Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge vehicle.

I guess we'll have to sell the ones we have and buy a new one.

You know governments and corporations have always been better at making promises than honoring them.

My wife and I just purchased our Jeeps. My Jeep has 7000km, on the odometer, and my wife's Jeep has 11,000km on the odometer. You mean to tell me that our Jeep's aren't going to be covered under the warranty? Do you know if this applies to Canada?

Under a very possible Chapter 11 the warranties should be fine with existing consumers, Jeep would have to cease to exist for the life time warranties to be gone.

Jason
there would be no point to have a .gov backed warranty program unless the warranty program ceased under bankruptcy

warranties are a liability on the books of a car company

Paragon, Do you really think that Chrysler is going to say FU to all the current owners of their products? I don't, and yes the press release does indicate that new owners are Gov backed so Chrysler can get consumer confidence up. Like I said the company would have to go copletely under for current warranties to be voided, chapter 11 will not void warranties. Obviousley Chrysler can discontinue future lifetime programs.

Tax break as well:

Special Tax Break Available for New Car Purchases This Year

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service announced today that taxpayers who buy a new passenger vehicle this year may be entitled to deduct state and local sales and excise taxes paid on the purchase on their 2009 tax returns next year.

“For those thinking about buying a new car this year, this deduction may give them a little more drive to make their purchase this year,” said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman. “This deduction enables taxpayers to buy now and get cash back later on their tax returns.”

The deduction is limited to the state and local sales and excise taxes paid on up to $49,500 of the purchase price of a qualified new car, light truck, motor home or motorcycle.

The amount of the deduction is phased out for taxpayers whose modified adjusted gross income is between $125,000 and $135,000 for individual filers and between $250,000 and $260,000 for joint filers.

IRS also alerted taxpayers that the vehicle must be purchased after Feb. 16, 2009, and before Jan. 1, 2010, to qualify for the deduction.

The special deduction is available regardless of whether a taxpayer itemizes deductions on their return. The IRS reminded taxpayers the deduction may not be taken on 2008 tax returns.

That's nothing new here in TX. We get to deduct our sales tax every year, and that includes sales tax on vehicles.

Its my understanding that if Chrysler merges with someone, or reorganizes under bankruptcy protection, everyone's warranties are good, but there is no assurance IF the company is liquidated and sold off piece by piece...even if Jeep survives...of course, this theoretically would only apply to Jeep bought before March 30, as the government has said they will honor warranties purchased on vehicles afterward...

I feel that even if Chrysler is liquidated, Jeep (the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee) is the only real thing Chrysler has of value besides its minivans and trucks, and that someone will pick them up...maybe even Fiat if a merger doesn't happen before then...

Personally, I am hoping for something that keeps them out of bankruptcy, but I am expecting liquidation...and someone buying Jeep...

I think the UAW already has its pensions, contracts, and stuff guaranteed by the government at this point. At least we were all really griping about that in some thread...that is a shame because the contracts sure are part of the problem...but at least we know why there is turning out to be great difficulty getting something done...
