2011 JK Rubicon Front / Rear Axle

Opinions please, jeep has about 16,000 miles on it, brought jeep in for a free oil change at the dealer (coupon)

Waiting for it when the service advisor comes in and says that I need to have front and rear axle gear oil changed because itís dirty and that it takes synthetic plus the additive.

I cry foul so he takes me back to the rack itís on and I check it myself, it was black, didn't smell burnt, didn't see or feel any grit in it, smelt basically like 80-90 weight gear oil. But since I Installed front sleeves past weekend I said go ahead.

So whatís your opinion on synthetic oil factory installed failing at 16,000 miles?

My 3/4 GMC w 8.1 runs synthetic in the pumpkins and is used to haul rock, dirt, trailers, ect. and wasn't changed until 40,000 miles, and it wasn't half as dirty.

And yes I am an aggressive driver, it has seen moderate off road use.

Black gear oil is black gear oil. It has been broken down. It needs to be changed no matter who actually changes it!

Why the oil is black is a different conversation.

Ha ha, what did they add to your oil? Someone elses old oil.

Gear boxes and transfer cases and the like do not get exposed to contaminates, so they shouldn't look like that. I'd say they need to look at a warranty issue. @16,000 miles, dang.

Wait, why did they even crack your rear open at 16,000 miles. When is the normal service for a diff? 30k 50k 60k?

Sounds even more weird now that i think about it.

And what's with a 'special' additive? If its mopar, then its not special, its just fluid. Just with a 'special' price tag.

The Owner's Manual calls for the first "Inspect Front and Rear Axle Fluids" at 24000 miles.

Everyone needs to remember that service writers make commissions for "optional" services they sell.

My question would be "Why are you opening my diffs when I came in asking for an engine oil change?"

A Rubicon doesn't have a limited slip and requires no additive. You just contributed to the service managers vacation fund, congrats!

The best was when they tried to sell me a $1,200 service at 35k miles. I laughed and told them I'd take my business elsewhere.
