Gear Shop

Wondering if any mechanic can be trusted to do a regear.

There is a convenient (nearby) mechanic that I would like to give my business to.

Just wondering if I need a 4x4 specialist to do the regear and strengthen my axles.

(as a side note I am trading my 1997 4-runner which needs new clutch to the shop and he will do the work for free...)

I would ask him if he has done any before. If not, then what is he going to do to take care of you if your ring and pinion blows up a mile or 5,000 miles down the road? Honestly, I would not trust someone who has never done them before. As around with your fellow jeepers, I bet they know someone. Where are you located?

I would prefer taking to a shop that does it frequently (more likely a 4x4 shop). While a normal general mechanic has done it before, his experience will be scattered pretty well. A 4x4 shop has probably seen dozens of Dana 30s, Dana 44s, Dana 60s, etc.
