Need info on 2009 X model

I went to look at a 2009 X 2 door tonight and almost drove it home, but the numbers weren't quite right for me. It might be a good thing though, as on the 30 mile drive home I thought of some questions.

What front axle is under the 2009? It looked really small to me. I don't have much experience here but it seemed smaller than a dana30?

Is surface rust on the rear diff cover normal? That was the only spot where there seemed to be a decent amount of rust. This Jeep has been in Florida it's whole life, but I think it spent time near the beach.

It seemed to be missing a lot of stuff from other Jeeps I've looked at, but I don't know if it was just different trims, or different model years or what.

This Jeep had:

No tow hooks (front or rear)

No center console arm rest...it did not appear to ever have one

No dash info on the left side under the tach. It was just blank. On other Jeeps I've seen a compass/temp thing there. Is that a 2011+ thing? It did light up with "door" when the door was open. I also found by pressing the odometer/trip button I could get the temp to come up, but it was on the right side and rather small.

I forgot to see if it had cruise control, but it had no power locks or windows. Pretty much a base model.

It seems like for 2009 there was only the Rubicon, Sahara, and X model. I assume there were a lot of option packages in 2009 to get the extra little things like towhooks?

Thats probably a stripped down X. It is indeed a Dana 30 under the front, all the gauge gizmos are with a higher trim package, and it probably also has the 16" wheels. Cruise can be added, the part is about $200 IIRC. And yes the tow hooks were an upgrade.

you are looking at a completely stripped down base model. Not that it is a bad thing if you are wanting to build up a Jeep.

All 4x4 model JK except for the Rubicon have a Dana 30 up front.

Thanks guys. I thought I remembered that some years didn't have the same axle..but now that I think harder it may have been the rear axle that was different on earlier models. It should have a Dana44 in the rear for all 2009's right?

The Jeep has some ugly aftermarket wheels with Nitto Terragrapplers on it but the small stock spare.

I'm not giving up on this Jeep. I think the sales guy will come around, he's had it on his lot for 7 months! Before that it sat on another lot for about 5 months according to car fax. I couldn't find anything wrong with it when I drove it except no TPMS sensors in the aftermarket wheels.

I don't know if I could handle not having a center console/armrest. There are aftermarket solutions for that right? What about adding a factory one?

Nope the real axle is also a D44 in all Jk's the difference you may be thinking about is that you could get 4.10 gears on 07's with the tow package, and some of the others had 3.23 gears I think. As far as no armrest, do you mean there is no center console whatsoever? or is it just a bit lower than what you would want for an armrest? There are a few aftermarket consoles out there, with the Tuff Security console coming to mind. Its a little pricey by some standards but it gives you great security. The lack of TPMS can be resolved with a superchips tuner.

Another question: How hard should it be to engage 4wd? I got the jeep to go into 4H and 4L but it required a good bit of effort tugging on the transfer case stick. At first it seemed stuck but then I gave it a good yank and it moved. Once in gear everything operated normally.

There is rumor that some of the early 07 had Dana 35 in the rear...the 09 definitely has Dana 44 from the factory in rear.

If you have the VIN you can request a build sheet from Jeep customer service on their website. That will tell you exactly how it left the factory.

My JK likes to be moving forward while shifting into 4WD.

Don't tug on it to hard you'll break the cheap plastic clip in the shifter..best to shift into N while rolling then shift into 4H or Lo mine is very smooth that way

I have the VIN, can you tell where to go to get that information? Do you have to register as an owner?

I was in neutral but stopped at the time. So you are saying it is best to shift into 4wd while the jeep is in motion?

My first Wrangler was a 2009 2 door X. The only options it had were air conditioning and metal fleck paint.

No tow hooks (I bought a set for $50 from someone who upgraded their bumper), no center console or arm rest. Crank windows and manual locks, no speed control. I bought it new so it came with the lifetime powertrain warranty. All for about $20,000.

It is definitely easier to shift in to 4wd when slowly rolling.

You can send Jeep an email from their contact us web page. Just ask for a build sheet and give them the VIN.

Thanks guys!! This forum rocks! I talked to the dealer again yesterday. I came up on my offer $2000 and he still won't do it. So I am off to find another jeep. I've found a 2010 with less miles and more options listed for the same price at another dealer. I'm kind of a lowballer (read: cheap, poor, etc) though so we'll see. I mainly want to get out of my $350/month truck payment. I have about 8k in equity in my truck but dealers keep offering me 4k over payoff so that won't fly. I just need to find one that is willing to mark down the jeep enough to make the final numbers work out if they won't give me what I want for the truck.
