cheapest thing I can think of is top down and ratchet straps to the roll bars

I started with the Cargomaster congo cage. It was cheap and easy but looked terrible...

I sold it after a week or two as it was more of a pain to take off than I thought it would be, it was ugly with nothing on it, and I couldn't fit my Jk in the garage with it. Here's a pic with nothing on it..

Then I started thinking and got smart. Go to Wally world and buy some cheap foam pool noodles and a couple ratchet straps...

I still use this technique sometimes but for beach runs I use the trailer now. Not the cheapest but it's the easiest!

I looked into this before. I remember reading elsewhere: whatever you do, don't mount racks on the rain gutters. The weight and wind force will clip them like finger nails...

where did you read this? ive seen several setups that have successfully used these mount options. just wondering if they might have overloaded or tightened down the mount too tight stressing the plastic top.

i too used to have the cargo master but it sits next to the shop now. that thing killed my gas mileage.

I have a soft top so that's not an issue. Thanks for the heads up.

I went the trailer route as well when I got my Jeep. I don't know what your budget is but you can find some decent trailer kits and or used trailers for as low as $300.

It's much easier on the back and gives you something else to throw money at . You just need to have someplace to store it.

We run a Rugged Ridge light bar, no lights. strap 2 yacks to it and to the roll bar in the back. Got it to keep the trees off the windshield. Unsub

I've got a Ocean Duo, so I have to strap to the bumper and carrier with pool noodles between the cage and kayak. I've driven from VA to NC with no problems.

Ya think I could throw it on top of the soft with some noodles under it for a half hour drive?

I carried mine several times no top just straps on the cage. I also tied it off front and back. Not too much tension though it is easy to over do it on the front and back part. I did not tie it off the handles that I carry it with. I didn't trust them for transport on the Jeep. I used motorcycle sling straps. You can get them at most any mc shop. I just realized I don't have any pictures of my kayak with my 09 JKU.

I also have a trailer that works great.
