Winch Care and Maintenance????

Anybody who lives (or lived) up north here care to give me a little guidance on how to care for my new winch through the winter months. I live on a dirt road so this thing is going to be covered with salt, mud, ice, snow, rain, mud and did I mention salt? Chances are really good that my wife isn't gonna let me get another, if I screw up this one. Should I cover it? With what? Take it off? Spray it with something? Suggestions are, as always, appreciated.

My friend owns a tow truck company. He advised me to keep my winch sprayed with WD-40 they use theirs every day so I trust advice... If I was up north, I would also get a fitted cover. Depends on the brand they usually have a cover to match. As for taking it off, winter is when you might just need the thing. I would leave it on.
