To those of you taking orders online

I really wanted to post a thread like this on the other forum but I was afraid I would be hunted and killed for violating forum rules. However, I feel like I can make this post here without as much harm coming to me.

I'm a software engineer of sorts. I mainly do web and mobile applications. Thus when I use websites I tend to look at them differently than others. I notice usability problems, browser problems, security issues, etc...

Most of these issues I ignore as they don't really impact my personal life. Sure, I'd rather the site's owners fixed them but hey its not my business. However, there are two issues that will stop me from using your site and prompt me to warn every person I know to not use your site.

The first issue above all others are poor payment procedures.
If I go to pay for something and I don't see a valid ssl cert that matches your domain I will walk away.
If your system feels like it was developed by your cousin or little brother and I will walk away.
Taking payment information like bank and cc numbers is very serious business. Treat it that way. If you don't understand exactly what is involved in protecting such data PLEASE PM ME!!! I will help you for FREE!

Now on to my second problem which is just as serious as the first. Privacy. If you ask for any sort of personally identifiable information you better have a privacy policy that tells me exactly what you plan to do with that data. You should also have a terms of service that outlines exactly what I should expect while using your site and what your and my liabilities are.

** bonus problem **
If you are using an off the shelf shopping cart like phpcart, oscommerce, etc.. please make sure they are always updated to the most recent stable version. Also make sure you subscribe to the email list that informs you of security issues. These types of systems are often targets of automated attacks and if successful the results can be devastating for both you and your customers.
