Dreaded P0420 Engine Code

2007 Sahara Unlimited

I recently replaced my radiator, thermostat, spark plugs, and wires. And some suspension parts up front, (Moog Ball Joints, Adjustable Front Upper and Lower Control Arms, Steering Stabilizer, Bearings, Rotors, and Pads). I have disconnected and reconnected a lot of hoses when it comes to the air system.

I got an engine light pop up on my way home from the shop and it scanned as P0420 Catalyst Efficiency (bank 1) and Another code popped up that said "Small Evap Leak".

I have been searching, but I don't want to start out looking at Catalytic Converters and O2 sensors if it could be something smaller. I have emissions due and I am tired of sinking money into this "new to me" jk and I want to try to pin the tail on the donkey fast.

All advice is welcome. Thanks!

For the small leak, look at the gas cap, and piping to the tank. I just fixed mine last week, the white plastic for a breather line over the gas tank cracked very slightly. just by touching it it popped up, so I used epoxy and fixed it up, no more check engine light on that knock on wood.

As far as the bank issue, I would re-check all hoses and electrical connectors. Godo luck!

Check for an exhaust leak - p0420 is catalyst efficiency bank 1
If you can view live data on your scan tool, watch the o2 sensors, and the fuel trims - both short term and long term - and post back with some data and I will try to help you out.

I watched a few youtube videos on what to look for for the exhaust leak, I will have to get my hands on a scan tool that shoots live data.

As for the small evap leak, when I get the chance to get under the jeep I will look at the connections on gas tank.

Thanks guys! Hopefully I can get to the bottom of it! I had a buddy of mine tell me that his shot the same codes, but he didn't have emissions so he didn't worry about it.
