JK Stock fuel economy?

My soon to be sister in law wants to buy a jeep to run around in with her kids. She had a YJ in high school and she and her husband miss it. Just a play convertible, unless we take a family offroad vacation, I doubt it needs 4WD

She currently drives a 2004 ish GMC Subdivision and wants something cheaper to drive the muchkins around in.

My opinion is a jeep isn't that much cheaper to run. Prove me wrong.

Well I doubt I'll prove you wrong... but I'll give you my two cents.

I have a 6 speed and most of the time I drive pretty easy. Usually in the city I can get an average of about 16, if I'm lucky. On the highway I get about 20-21 at best.

I also just put the Airaid CAI into my car this past week. I haven't driven more than 100-150 with it in at this point, but I've been getting a good 18 mpg in the city, thus far. I'll be driving a good 300 mile trip this next week and I'll get back to you on how the intake is affecting my highway mileage.

Don't know if this helps, but that's what I got.

well we have almost 7k miles on ours already, and we get about 15 city and 18 highway... ours is a rubicon unlimited though, with stock 32' tires, so that might also cause the unreasonable gas milage

By the time she considers the depreciated sale or trade in value of the (likely high mileage?) Suburban...against the (new?) dealer mark up of the JK 4 door...then that might equal quite a few gallons of gas! Unless she gets a screamin deal on both ends (...like maybe the Suburban is in great shape, low miles, extended warranty...and the JK is a used X pkg...) then I think she should consider some other options. I actually think the Sub is an 04 (actually a Yukon XL, but whatever) very clean and not holding value for crap with gas prices the way they are. We have a similar Yukon (shorter wheel base) that gets 12 around town. With me nursing it on the highway I can squeak 17.5.

I am not of the opinion that this is a purely financial decision. If I can get them in a 4wd that means a family four wheeling vacation is closer to happening.

FWIW, I also have a 2000 minivan and I am getting the same mileage on the highway with the 4 door Rubicon. In town a little less the the minivan, but I was aware that there would hit in town for mileage.

If I were them, I would at least consider 4wd. It will be there if they need it and ONCE you get them hooked on wheeling they won't have to trade it.

MPG

Iwas driving yesterday on the highway @ 50mph with 08 2dr JK "X" auto and 3:73 and hit 26MPG just before it turned 6000 miles. Sorry for the quality of the picture, but it is a JEEP u know, not a Lexus.
