Hub Winch

Does anyone here have now, or have used, hub winches? Thoughts on them.

if we are playing the psychological word association game , the thought that comes to mind is "dangerous" followed by " 1947" & then," outback" ...(that was three words, I know.....)

Id be concerned with bending/braking wheel studs. It would definitely not be my go to recovery device

Even my 1947 CJ2a sports a PTO winch instead of a hub winch. Pretty rare that your anchor is in the right place to use a hub winch. also pretty rare that the anchor is on the same side as the tire that can spin. What if traction changes and the other side (open diff) starts to spin instead? reset your hub winch on the other side i guess. Will this require a new anchor? probably.

By now, you could have pulled yourself out with a highlift jack and a chain.

I wouldn't buy one.... I've pulled myself out before by wrapping a strap around the tire and letting the strap spool around the tire. It is a major pita, and felt like it was a lot of strain on the jeep! Also I don't think it would work with out a locker and if used more than once or twice in emergency situations I think it would eventually break something!

Invest in a tractor jack (high lift), come along, or something like that if you want recovery on a budget!
