for the sake of sanity and a learning lesson

Maybe its my worn tires but my 07 X tcase knob has vibration /gear meshing vibrations bad on pavement especially when accelerating. Time for a service or fluid change?

This is just to put a curiousity to rest without disassembly

Chances are it's a balancing issue. Either tires or drivelines. Before you disassemble your tcase, check to see if your shafts are worn or damaged to the point of taking them out of balance. You could also borrow a set of wheels and tires from one of your buddies and go for a drive. If you're not feeling any balance related vibrations, it might be as simple as a worn trans mount. Your 2007 is now 8 years old and the rubber in the mount could be fubared.

I would check everything else before tearing your tcase apart hoping to find the issue.
