Broken front axle

Got a friend that broke his d side front inner on a 12 JK this morning. He drove home on it and now the bearing is effed as well as the carrier. Can I pull the axles out and have him drive without stubs in or will not having the stubs in destroy the unit bearings?

I know in the TJs, LJs and YJs the stubs have to stay in or the unit bearings separate.

Side note: He's in search of front inner and carrier. lol

Yank the axleshaft and stuff a rag in the tube he will be fine.
