Tire backspace

I am putting as 3 inch lift on my 2009 JK. I want 35" wheels on it as well. I am getting the Rancho RS9000XL shocks on it too and I was told I am going to need 4.5" of backspace when searching for tires. This is my first time putting aftermarket wheels/tires on a vehicle so I am sort of confused what it means. If I could get some help and recommendations that would be awesome!
