** STAR WASHERS **

I put new tires and wheels on today, AFTER getting them on, I remembered reading somewhere that the star washers (retaining washers) on the wheel studs should be removed. I researched a little and can't find anyone talking about it any more recent than 2012. I have a 2015... does anyone know if Jeep still uses the star washers on the wheel studs?

It's not a big deal either way.

OP, I can't answer the 2015 question. Pull one wheel and see for yourself....though someone mah chime in w a 2015 shortly.

It is aftermarket wheels. I'm sure '15 have them, but I sure was hoping someone would tell me they don't.

I'm sure they still do. They don't want the rotors to fall off going down the line. My '14 had several on each rotor. One rotor had 4 of them on it! Yank em off!

Whats the deal with yanking them off. I know you dont reallyneed them and if you need to remove the rotors you dont need to but them back on. My 07 has them on still and i had aftermarket rims for almost 2 yrs with no problems.

Ok I am not saying that could not happen, but again i had my aftermarkets on for two years with those little washers still on and the lugs never loosened or tire fell of driving down the road cue dramatic music. I do rotate my tires every other oil change or 3 sometimes and the lugs were never loose always had to use plenty of force to break them free. Now will be putting on new rotors this summer gotten 130k miles on them now so I will probably ditch them then.

FOUND THS WHILE SEARCHING ABOUT THE STAR WASHERS

For those of you who have aftermarket wheels and have a steering wheel shimmy, this may help. A freind of mine mentioned to me today that he has a steering wheel shimmy at 45-50 mph in his JK that he hasn't been able to fix, even after having his wheels/tires balanced 4 times. So, he brings it over and we take a look. After inspecting the front end components, everything checked out so we took off his front wheels. Turns out the tire shop who installed his wheels/tires didn't remove the retaining washers (star washers) on the wheel studs when they installed his aftermarket wheels. I had the same problem on a Silverado I had a few years ago, took me a few trips back for balancing issues before I figured it out. If the back side (mounting surface) of your wheel is flat, and not recessed around the lug hole like the OEM wheels are, the wheel will not seat flush against the rotor when the wheel is mounted causing a slight canter (angle) and give the same symptoms as out of balance wheels. We removed the washers, remounted the wheels, and now it drives like a diferent Jeep. So, if your having balancing/steering issues, take a look behind your aftermarket wheels and see if the washers are installed. Makes a huge difference.

Some aftermarket rims have the recess. We lifted a buddy's 14 this weekend an pulled those off then looked at his rims and they have the recess so we didn't need to do this step.

Those are installed to hold the rotors on during assembly. Remove them if you aren't sure what it takes to do it right.

Just got finished pulling the wheels off... and yep 2015's def have them - 4 of them on each back and 2 on each front. And the new wheels XD Spy's aren't recessed around the holes. Wish I had remembered to do that to begin with.

Good to know. I had spacers installed along with my lift and I am not sure if the installer removed them, hopefully I can find time this week to make sure they are removed.
