Spare tire health

So I am in the camp of "4 tire rotation and 1 full time spare" ..
any of you other guy that run this way "by choice or necessity" ..
What do you do to keep that spare in good shape, with dry rot and cracking and wht not?

Out of necessity... not choice.

Bent rim... Not too badly bent but I don't rotate in the spare b/c I don't want to tempt shimmy or DW.

I keep it dry and out of the sunlight. Eventually it will begin to crack but it's still in excellent shape.

Hindsight... but I should have replaced the rim when I upgraded to 37's.

I understand that 5 tire rotation is the way to go... but..
on my budget I barely was able to aford the 4 I got...
so the best of my other set is on as the spare but they are not the same brand, style or actual size so tossing it in the rotation really doesnt work.

sounds like I may need to find a nice cover for it...
or keep it in the garage..and hope for no nails in the road.

I've tossed the bobtail idea around, haven't pulled the trigger. If I go with no spare there will be a Green Slime kit in the vehicle at all times.

Throw on an onboard air compressor & tire plug kit. Then you'll be golden. That green slime kit can throw the tire out of balance (it'll get you home, but I wouldn't keep on driving).

I do the 5 tire rotation. Gets me 20% more life out of my tires. Replacing 5 37's costs me a mortgage payment!

5 tire rotation, matching spare. Equal tire height when swapping in the spare, prevents cracking/rot, when it's time for new tires, doubt I'll run the same ones. I bought the replacement certificates from America's Tire (Discount Tire) with my Trail Grapplers, wouldn't have bothered with them as they're bulletproof.

If you have 5 matching wheels, you can rotate the spare each time you buy your 4 new tires.

i rotate 4, don't see a point in buying another tire to just sit there and 5 tires i doubt are going to give you an extra 10k miles. given that my spare is just a cheap non matching i don't bother covering it

How long ago did you get the new tires? If you are getting ready for the first rotation, or maybe as late as the second pick up the 5th tire and rotate it in at that time. Not any cheaper, but would allow you to break up the cost a bit and still run a 5 tire rotation.

With a street-life of 6 to 10 years, depending on how much you drive, the spare could run out of useful life by your first tire change if not used.
