Another ClockSpring Bites the dust

Light came on a couple of months ago. I have 55K miles on my 2009 JK.

I went into dealer for an oil change and 5 Year Life-Time Warranty inspection.

I told them about ABS light and they diagnosed it as ClockSpring of course. I had them call Jeep .. but Jeep said they would not help cover repair cost. Dealer said they would do repair - parts and Labor for $320 ... I told them go for it - the AIRBAG light is super bright and dead center of the cluster - very annoying.

When I got home last night I filed a report with the NHTSA like everyone else is doing. I also sent Email to Jeep Customer service saying Dealer found OPEN CIRCUIT on Driver AirBag and airbag would not have have deployed in an accident so I HAD to repair it. I then asked to be compensated for the repair. I will see how that goes.

Also .. this is a mod friendly dealer ... My JK passed the 5 year inspection with flying colors.

Mine went out last month Dan. Swapped it out myself, easy swap. Got the clockspring online for $205 shipped. I'm with you, that ABS light is right in the middle of the dash and mine was dining every 2 or 3 minutes, sometimes, driving me crazy.

Good luck getting your money back, hope you do.

I assume you had purchased an extended warranty?

The more I see these clock springs popping I see it is a lot of 2 doors. Then I checked my 2 door versus a 4 door and it seems the 2 door steering wheel turns 1 3/4 times to the 4 door that turns 1 1/2 times from center to lock. Thinking maybe it's the extra 1/4 turn that is stressing these things.

It sounds like someone didn't pull the wiring harness free from the clock spring before pulling the wheel.

Pull the center cover off of the wheel. takes a few minutes with a 90degree pick tool. Dsiconnect the 2 wiring harnesses from the airbag module. You'll see 4 pressure switches wired in parallel in the steering wheel, from what i can tell, all four must make contact for the horn to work properly. Check the wiring, i'm sure on of them is broken.

A good write up for it here: https://www.jkowners.com/forum/showthread.php?t=92336

I think this thing is finally coming together. Still Needed: drive shafts, frame mount rails...then done son! For a while...

From what I understand if something is replaced under warranty it extends that part for another year plus 12,000 miles, or at least that has been my experience I've had.
