Need help replacing my 2008 3.8!

I'm in the process of trying to replace my 3.8 because I'm a dumbass.

Dealership wanted $8000 to get a new long block and internals. I was able to rescue it from them after they wanted $2500 just for taking off the oil pan & telling me this. (I didnt pay that!)

Rebel has quoted me 1800 for a straight swap if I provide a motor. Or 3400 (parts only) to do the long block. Guess which I'm trying to do...

It looks like if I do this right I can find a used motor for $2k. I didnt have any luck calling AEV, no 3.8's available.
The Jeep Speed Shop in norcal hasnt called me back... & my local shops in Orange County (Offroad Evo & Rebel) don't have engines laying around.

Is LKQ a legit source for a motor? I just called & they have a "reman?" for $2100 with a 3yr warranty. They also had a used one with 32k mi for $2200.

I was a bit thrown off that they wanted my motor in return or an extra $250 if I dont send them it.

I know there are a lot of Socal people on here & I would love some help on this as I am without a vehicle & only half a clue on what I am doing.

Anyone have leads on engines laying around or shops that do hemi swaps & may have some? Willing to pay freight.

They usually have low mileage motors laying around.

No problem. We bought a motor from him last year and he gave us a great deal. Just tell him you are from JKOwners.

Have you tried car-part.com its a database of parts from various salvage yards. They might have a low-mile pull from a wrecked unit near you.

_
'76 CJ-7, '43 CJ-2a, '78 Bronco,'78 CJ-7, '75 CJ-5, '78 CJ-7, '80 CJ-7, '78 SJ, '79 SJ, '78 and a '76 FJ-40 , '90 XJ, '91 XJ, '86 CJ-7, '95 ZJ, '68 CJ-101 Commando, '00 TJ, '68 M-715, 2 '86 Military Blazers, '96 LR Discovery, '86 CJ-7, '91 YJ, '99 TJ, 07' JKU Rubi, 1988 YJ, 1973 Commando, 3 Diesel Excursions....

What happened to your engine? Unless you shot a rod through the block I'd bet you could get it repaired. Any decent machine shop should be able to to disassemble your engine and repair damage. Whether or not its worth paying them to do it, is another battle.

Thanks, they were recommended to me by the guys at AEV. They had 2 motors. 1 sounded like a good deal with their reman 3 yr warranty. I may go that route for the higher $ & higher miles for that warranty.

According to the dealer it needs a new long block & whatever else goes along with that. I basically ran the motor dry... Want to see the exact moment it died?

http://youtu.be/oN9z2w3-9NY

It had almost no oil because A) I didnt check it. B) the dead water pump probably allowed the motor to run a little hot & eat some oil over time. C) I'm a dumbass.

So when I parked it there running, the pickup didnt get any oil for a good 6 minutes. Drove it away with a knock I didnt have when I parked it there.

Might be a dumb question but could you put a 3.6 in there? Or are the motor mounts and all that shit different?

I'm pretty sure i saw a thread about this earlier. I believe the general consensus was that it isn't worth it. Basically, if you're gonna do an engine swap go ls or hemi. All the homework has been done and the ls can be found pretty cheap.

Pretty significant alterations I'd imagine. Entire engine harness, trans, cooling system changes, a/c system changes, etc.

Ya that's kinda what I thought, sounds like you should find yourself a ls!
