When does your truck become a rig?

Just curious. Now that I have a lift, bigger wheels, steel bumpers, sliders, a winch, and off-road lights, I have been referring to my Jeep more and more as a rig. Coming from the biker community, you don't sport a maltese (iron) cross unless you built your own scooter. It is understood. Are there any similar do's and don'ts in the Jeep community?

I guess I'll be getting a maltese cross, then. I built this scooter when I was a kid back in '68.

I'm serious, guys, nothing? Do you have to fab something out of steel you made from the ore you dug up by hand in Alaska? No? Rescued someone? No? Can you call it a rig the day you drive it off the lot? Can a rig be all bolt-on parts?

I don't think anyone really cares when or why you start calling it a rig, we certainly don't have rules and wouldn't stop anyone from getting a rainbow tattoo unless they weld a unicorn to the hood.

Ah, just a generic term then. Thanks. Thought for sure some old jeepers would have some kind of restriction on that. Cool.

Here's my perception of it...
I wouldn't call a car a rig. Hook a trailer to the back of it, and the word rig applies to the whole works.

I wouldn't call a chassis/cab a rig. Put a well drill on it, or a crane, or some other machine, and it becomes a rig.

How does it apply to the JK? Maybe a winch qualifies, because it's used for things outside the Jeep.

Bottom line, though, it's up to the person using the word. If someone called his stock Jeep a rig, I would know what he means.

That's where I thought this conversation was going to go, since you have to "rig" up your winch cable to do work. I was thinking it has to have more capability than just driving it. Like an on-board welder, or on-board air, or the aforementioned winch. Thanks for your opinion, Ron.

If your Jeep:

has chrome accessories,
is rolling on wheels larger than 17's,
or has modifications that had to be approved by your wife,

then it is not a rig.

Anything else = call it what you want.

Just don't call it a car.

If you have airhorns and cab lights on your JK Freedom Top, it automatically becomes a rig.

I myself like to call a Jeep a Jeep and will always refer to our Jeep as a Jeep no matter what mods it has on or will get in the future. I don't mind anybody calling their Jeep a rig, modded or not, but and BUT, I hate it when anyone call their Jeep a truck or a car, I hate it!!!!! But that is just me.

I'm in this camp. "Jeep" carries the aura and mystery of the "Jeep Thing" that rig does not.

But anytime you move away from stock, in my book you have modified or rigged your Jeep, even if it's grab handles and mats. Call it a rig if it suits you. Just doesn't work for me as well as "Jeep".

No rules man, do as you please. You can tattoo a rainbow on your JK and weld a unicorn on your chest for all I car. I want pics of both though.

did you do your work yourself (even if its bolt ons) ? = RIG

...Or did you have a shop bolt everything on for you = call it what you want, but it will never be a Jeep or a Rig !

This damn post got me thinking: If I pierced my junk would it then be a rig? If I had someone else do the piercing would it still be a rig or would it just be junk with jewelry and what tattoo applies for rigging your junk?

people were calling my jeeps "rigs", I didn't know what they were talking about. Now I understand it to be "anything with 4 wheels that could drive off road". Generic.

I love Wheeling, it frees the mind

Doesn't matter who does the work. Your junk would still be a Jeep. I looked it up in the Urban Dictionary.
