New device to break into cars

This was forwarded within my department. Not sure if its already been circulated around the forums but its pretty interesting. Nobody can tell what it is or how it is unlocking doors so easily.

That being said, it shouldn't effect jeeps too much or older cars. It appears it only works with "touch entry" like most cars are going to but I'm curious if it just picks up the keyless entry radio frequency.

I thought that LAPD captured one of these "boxes" and was studying it. And that's why I have a kill switch on the jeep.

Consider I have a soft top Im not too worried about it.
It would be way easier yo just unzip the back and climb inside.

The most valuable thing in my Jeep are the doors themselves. I still don't lock it half the time though.

I've know about this for a while. I find it funny that it's stumpping both auto manufactures and the police.

Don't get me started...I used to be an audiophile. I don't even listen to music anymore. I'm so depressed.

saw this posted on another jeep forum ....

Supposedly gotten from a "Be on the lookout" (a "BOLO") bulletin that a cop buddy got...

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) has received information, in regards to the recent news articles/videos that outline reports of vehicles being unlocked by small hand held devices. When the Electronic Magnetic Pulse (EMP) device is activated it sends out a pulse that tricks the vehicle’s computer that the vehicle has been in a crash.
For many vehicles (especially those built in Asia) if the vehicle suspects a crash, it unlocks the doors to allow first responders to enter the vehicle.
Above are photos of one such device that was seized in Texas as mentioned in one of the news videos. This device was being concealed in a cigarette package when recovered by authorities. The device has been evaluated and tested by Federal Law Enforcement and also sent to vehicle manufacturer engineers for testing on various makes and models. Additional information has been received from Canada authorities, outlining their recent rash of similar crimes and the seizure of small (EMP) devices.
Attached is a link to a YouTube video where thieves are using a small Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) device to open door locks.
If you have any crimes that match this M.O. please contact: The Taskforce for Regional Autotheft Prevention (LACSO) - Headquarters ATTENTION LIEUTENANT JEFF ENFIELD

I would really like to find out if one of these devices works on our jeeps.

Odd thing is I have seen two separate videos of a device being used. One is the one where the thief holds the device right up to the door lock. ANd another where this fellow is apparently walking past a lot of cars seeing if they unlock. Well he passes this one particular car that had a dashcam and he uses the device while walking along and he stops abruptly because the car unlocked. He was standing maybe 5 feet away. So because of that i wonder if there are actually two different devices?

I haven't locked my stuff in a long time. Usually the most expensive thing to replace is the window the thieves used to break!

I don't leave anything there either, but if I need to leave it somewhere like an airport or parking garage... I might just unplug the doors.

Of course that might piss'm off enough to do more damage. Hopefully they'd just move along to the next easy target.
