JK towing question

Towing question.
2009 JK 3.8 v6 6speed manual tranny. 4:10 gears. After market hitch as Jeep did not come with tow package. Tow a popup trailer that weighs about 1200 pounds loaded. With all the other junk for camping must be 2000 pounds. I've been running (towing) in 5th gear and at about 2600 RPM's. Question is this, is this OK or hard on tranny or other components? What gear in this tranny is direct? Will I hurt anything towing in 6th (OD) gear? I ruined a 92 Chevy manual tranny towing in OD (5th) and sure don't want to do that again. Jeep (Chrysler) was no help at all with this question.
Thanks in advance.
