Coolant smell only when heat is put on floor?

I have a 2007 JK, and I get a slight smell of coolant when I use the heater on the floor only option.

Is this a leak in the core, or is it something else?

There has to be a leak in heater core or hoses going into the heater box area for the smell to occur. Usually defrost is worse. You'll likely have to pull it and see what's leaking.

in our highschool maintenance class, i found a coolant leak we were trying to troubleshoot in a CJ7. it was super cold outside. instructor had a pressure tester on the radiator. said to start it up. i did... and waited 3 or 4 minutes as he watched the gauge. i believe looking for a pressure increase from a blown head gasket. i was cold... so i turned the heat on, which was set to defrost. i saw a very light puff of steam from from the defrost vents.

leak found. it was very light and owner thought the slight bit of coolant leaking from the HVAC onto the ground was normal condensate.
